Center for Future Architectures Research
C-FAR is focused on computer systems architectures for the transitional 2020s, as the benefits of CMOS scaling slow, and we wait for post-CMOS devices to reach full production. Continued scalability will depend on successful innovation of application-driven architectures leveraging emerging circuit fabrics such as 3D interconnect, novel memories and programmable logic. Meanwhile, the growth of "big data" across all platforms (sensor, mobile and server) and markets (commercial and defense) will cause performance and security to emerge as first-class architectural concerns. » More

SONIC is addressing challenges associated with the design of intelligent embedded systems on nanoscale CMOS and beyond CMOS device fabrics. Intelligence comes at the expense of energy while nanoscale fabrics introduce intrinsically statistical behavior. Thus, achieving energy efficiency and robustness in the nanoscale era is a formidable challenge for future semiconductor electronic systems. In order to address these challenges, SONIC proposes a radical shift from the deterministic model of von Neumann style computing to a Shannon and neuro-inspired information processing paradigm, where the uncertainty induced by nanoscale statistics is embraced from systems and applications to devices. » More

TerraSwarm is addressing the huge potential—and associated risks—of pervasive integration of smart, networked sensors and actuators into our connected world. The center aims to enable the simple, reliable, and secure deployment of a multiplicity of advanced distributed sense and control applications on shared, massively distributed, heterogeneous, and mostly uncoordinated platforms through an open and universal systems architecture. » More

LEAST is investigating the physics of new materials and devices toward disruptive advances in integrated circuits and systems. LEAST focuses on field-controlled, low-voltage, steep-subthreshold devices and the exploration of solid-state phenomena to extend device performance to fundamental limits beyond heat removal. In particular, it is exploring the promise of the TFET transistor, a leading option for a post-CMOS switch. » More
