The Insight Toolkit

Kitware is one of the original six collaborators tasked with developing an open-source, cross-platform registration and segmentation toolkit that became the Insight Toolkit (ITK). Working with GE Corporate R&D, MathSoft, the University of North Carolina, University of Tennessee, and University of Pennsylvania, ITK was built to provide developers with an extensive suite of software tools for image analysis. Developed through extreme programming methodologies, ITK employs leading-edge algorithms for registering and segmenting multidimensional data.

The robust, global ITK community is critical to the success and growth of the toolkit, and Kitware is and has been an active participant, contributing not only technical developments but also building and strengthening the community. Recently Kitware has contributed to the modularization of and migration to ITKv4, which creates a sustainable, long-term framework to ensure the longevity of ITK. Kitware has also collaborated on SimpleITK, a simplified interface for ITK to facilitate rapid prototyping, use in education, and work with interpreted languages.
