Maricela lived in a small home with her husband, three sons and elderly mother-in-law. Her husband struggled to find work and often had to leave his village in search of employment, leaving Maricela alone to care for the family. If they were ever to escape the crushing grip of poverty and hunger, Maricela desperately needed an opportunity to reach her full potential and put her talent and determination to work to earn a better living. That life-changing opportunity arrived in the form of livestock and training she received from compassionate Heifer supporters like you.

In many countries where Heifer works, women and girls are denied the right to own property or livestock, to attend school and get an education, to access clean water and even to open a bank account or secure a loan. As a result, women and girls bear the brunt of poverty worldwide. This not only limits their own potential to succeed, it negatively impacts the health and well-being of their children and keeps communities and entire countries mired in poverty.
