For example, the Legislature in 2014 directed the Iowa Department of Public Health and Department of Education to collaborate on advancing suicide prevention efforts. Iowa’s law banning texting while driving is failing to reduce road crashes, and officers seldom enforce it because of legal restrictions, an IowaWatch investigation shows. The data includes farm-related fatality reports from 2001 through 2011 as well as charts illustrating trends in the data, such as the number of farm-related deaths as a percentage of the total occupational fatalities. The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics is considering barriers around its parking ramps following four attempted suicides, three of which resulted in death. Iowa faces a shortage of psychiatrists, meaning patients must wait for appointments and arrive at treatment sicker.

Iowa signed a no-bid contract with a Kentucky non-profit, Connected Nation, to help with Gov. Terry Branstad’s efforts to expand broadband Internet access across the state. The firm has done broadband mapping and community engagement for Iowa since 2009, but when federal funding ran out in January, Iowa stepped in with a quickie contract to extend the services for eight months with state money.
