Books: the World Trade Center Attack

While numerous books questioning the official story of the 9/11/01 attack have been published, few have examined the forensics of the core of the attack -- the destruction of the World Trade Center. We believe that some of the following books, by addressing that subject, will eventually be recognized as historically significant. Books examining other aspects of the attack are listed on a separate page.

Because it is clear that the claim that no Boeing crashed the Pentagon lacks scientific merit and has been used with great success to distract from and discredit challenges to the official account the World Trade Center's destruction, books promoting this claim are distinguished here from those whose analysis is not so encumbered.

It covers a surprising breadth of topics in its 110 pages, and includes a glossary, index, and extensive set of references that are given tinyurl.com addresses for ease of access. 9/11: The Simple Facts focuses on the verifiable facts surronding the destruction of the WTC complex that so clearly belie the collapse theory rubber-stamped by NIST. 	The World Is Turning: ''9/11'', the Movement for Justice, and Reclaiming America for the World by Don Paul This volume is a compilation of several earlier works and new material by one of the first and most persistent investigators of the the attack of 9/11/2001, Don Paul. With a foreward by whistleblower Kevin Ryan, The World Is Turning penetrates the web of deceit surrounding the crime with a clear exposition of the physical evidence of the controlled demolition of the World Trade Center, and analysis of who benefited. 	Waking Up from Our Nightmare, the 9/11/01 Crimes in New York City by Don Paul and Jim Hoffman This richly illustrated 80-page book provides simple proofs that the World Trade Center towers and Building 7 were destroyed through controlled demolition. It then details the individuals and industries that have profited from that day's destruction in New York City and from the ensuing "War on Terror" -- real estate interests, military contractors, oil-and-gas corporations, narcotics traffickers, and above all global financial institutions. The final section of Waking Up ... concerns 'Cooperative Solutions' that are now at work around the world -- community currencies, organic farming, women's development banks, eco-banks, wind and solar power, and truly independent media. 	Facing our Fascist State by Don Paul This book briefly but persuasively addresses the collapses of the Twin Towers and Bulding 7. Paul cites studies by the Corus Construction corporation, which measured the temperatures of steel columns and beams in uninsulated steel-frame car-parks subjected to sustained hydrocarbon-fueled fires. The highest steel temperatures recorded in those studies was only 360ºC, far below the 800ºC figure assumed by the column failure theory. Paul's book covers issues of WTC ownership and insurance in some detail, and has information on who was warned and who avoided the WTC on September 11th. Books Promoting the Official Account

	City in the Sky: The Rise and Fall of the World Trade Center by James Glanz and Eric Lipton In this book New York Times reporters James Glanz and Eric Lipton trace the history of the World Trade Center from before the project was conceived through the 9/11/01 attack and its aftermath. City in the Sky is a treasure trove of information about the history of the Twin Towers, from biographical details about the key players, to the political struggles surrounding the World Trade Center project, to specifics of the buildings' design. It also appears to be written with an agenda: to blame the design of the Twin Towers for the catastrophic loss of life on 9/11/01, while avoiding any hint that their destruction was the work of insiders.	amazon.com
	Debunking 9/11 Myths by David Dunbar and Brad Reagan This book is a slightly expanded print version of the 2005 Popular Mechanics article, which attacks sixteen claims that it asserts are the "most prevalent" among "conspiracy theorists." The piece is a study in the straw man technique: setting up and debunking fake claims as a substitute for addressing valid ones. The article's use of that technique is the subject of the essay Popular Mechanics Attacks Its "9/11 LIES" Straw Man. The book adds three claims to the original list, and pads the volume with a chapter entitled "The Conspiracy Industry" -- which smears 9-11 Research by falsely implying it promotes the kind of straw man claims that Popular Mechanics highlights -- and a large excerpt from NIST's Report on the Twin Towers. Since the original Popular Mechanics article and NIST's Report are both available online, there is very little reason to buy the book.	amazon.com

	Who They Were: Inside the World Trade Center DNA Story by Robert C. Shaler This book, whose full title is Who They Were: Inside the World Trade Center DNA Story: The Unprecedented Effort to Identify the Missing, is by the former director of the Forensic Biology Department of the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner of New York, Robert Shaler. The book recounts the three-year effort to identify those missing in the 2001 attack on the World Trade Center, relating the array of obstacles Shayler's team faced -- from interagency turf battles to the sheer scope and technical difficulty of identifying so many victims given the state of the remains. By April of 2005, when the process was suspended, only 1,592 out of 2,749 thought to have died in the attack had been identified.	amazon.com
	Aftermath: Unseen 9/11 Photos by a New York City Cop by John Botte This book is by John Botte, an NYPD detective at the time of the attack who spent countless hours at Ground Zero in the recovery effort. Botte writes: "Along with thousands of others who lost loved ones to 9/11, I relive the events of that day every day. It took the lives of many of my colleagues and friends, caused an early retirement from a career I loved, and gave me a chronic lung condition that nearly ended my life."	amazon.com

Books Mixing Challenges to the Official Account with Promotion of the Pentagon "No-Boeing" Claim

	The 9/11 Commission Report: Omissions and Distortions by David Ray Griffin This detailed, incisive, and thoroughly referenced book exposes the 9/11 Commission's report as a sham. It begins by revealing that the "National Commission on Terrorist Attacks Upon the United States" which describes itself as "an independent, bipartisan commission," was guided by executive director Philip Zelikow, an insider in both the first and second Bush administrations. The book consists of two main parts: the first examines evidence contradicting the official story, and the second looks at the commission's attempt to absolve the US military of responsibility by crafting a new timeline of response to the attack. The first part contains the following chapters: The Alleged Hijackers The Collapse of the World Trade Center Buildings The Strike on the Pentagon The Behavior of Bush and His Secret Service Advance Information about the Attacks Osama, the bin Ladens, and the Saudi Royal Family The Saudi Flights FBI Obstructions Pakistan and Its ISI Possible Motives of the Bush Administration Chapter 2 provides one of the most concise yet thorough refutations of the official account of the collapses of WTC 1, 2, and 7 at the time of its publication. 	The New Pearl Harbor: Disturbing Questions about the Bush Administration and 9/11 by David Ray Griffin This 256-page book essentially summarizes the research of independent investigators of the 9/11/01 attack in the time period of 2002-3, and builds a cumulative argument implicating at least the Bush administration in the attack. Griffin addresses the breadth of evidence against the official story, ranging from failures to intercept the hijacked planes, to problems in the offical accounts of the Pentagon attack and World Trade Center building collapses, to detailed foreknowledge of the attack. Griffin features the now-discredited Eric Hufschmid on evidence that the World Trade Center was demolished, and Thierry Meyssan and Gerard Holmgren on theories about what hit the Pentagon. Griffin's book is well organized and supported by an extensive bibliography. Its main weakness is its promotion of the claims of no-757-crash theorists, such as Meyssan's clearly false claim that the Pentagon impact hole diameter was 18 feet.	amazon.com
	Christian Faith and the Truth Behind 9/11 by David Griffin This is Dr. Griffin's third major book analyzing the 9/11/01 attack. Unlike his previous books, The New Pearl Harbor and Omissions and Distortions, this book devotes one of its two parts, 'A Christian Critique of 9/11 and American Imperialism,' to a philosophical and ethical analysis of the geopolitical context of the attack. Nonetheless, the book's first part, 'Evidence That 9/11 Was a False-Flag Operation' contains Griffin's most detailed analysis of the attack, including his essays 'The Destruction of the World Trade Center: Why the Official Account Cannot Be True' and 'Flights of Fancy: The 9/11 Commission's Incredible Tales of Flights 11, 175, 77, and 93.'	amazon.com
	Inside Job: Unmasking the 9-11 Conspiracies by Jim Marrs This book takes some material from a previous Marrs book, The War on Freedom and updates it with new research. It also includes a preface by widow Ellen Mariani and her entire complaint against insiders. Inside Job has 17 pages on the destruction of the World Trade Center in four chapters: Explosion at the World Trade Center Firefighters Thought the Fires Were Controllable What Caused the Collapse of Building 7? FEMA's Report: Cause of WTC Collapses Unknown In the FEMA chapter Marrs notes that the dismal official record has left large gaps that have been filled by independent research. Citing 911Research.wtc7.net and the analysis of Jim Hoffman, Marrs notes that the destruction of the Twin Towers had the following characteristics: The cores of the towers were obliterated and the perimeter walls were shredded. Nearly all the concrete was pulverized in the air. Parts of the towers were thrown up to 500 feet laterally. Explosive events were visible before many floors had collapsed. The towers' tops mushroomed into thick dust clouds much larger than the original volumes of the buildings. The tops fell at nearly the rate of free-fall. The book's 18th chapter What About Israeli Foreknowledge? provides a run-down of the circumstantial evidence that entities with connections to Israel were involved in the attack. Unlike many other researchers, Marrs doesn't overreach, concluding: "it can only be said at this point that current evidence points to the likelihood that 9/11 marks the convergence of overlapping and surreptitious agendas of many hidden parties, both domestic and international." The book's breif promotion of the Pentagon no-Boeing-crash theory, using some of usual errors, might be overlooked given the book's publication in 2004.	amazon.com
	Painful Questions by Eric Hufschmid * (Glossy, letter-sized, has 100+ photos and graphics, most in color.) An in-depth and non-technical analysis of the destruction WTC Buildings 1, 2 and 7, the Pentagon attack, and the Kennedy assassination. The book's greatest strength is its many high-resolution photographs of the destruction of the Twin Towers, many not available on the web. The second edition of the book corrects some errors in the first edition such as the WTC 6 explosion theory, and the widely repeated mistake that both towers collapsed in under ten seconds. Hufschmid's book has the distinction of being the first to expose numerous problems in the official story of the WTC collapses. A significant fraction of the book is devoted to attacking the account that Flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon, where Hufschmid mischaracterizes the eyewitness evidence, and the amount of aircraft debris at the site. Painful Questions is not footnoted, but does list credits for images. Originally published in mid-2002, it was the first book to clearly show that the WTC buildings were destroyed by demolition. Hufschmid's video, Painful Deceptions, was originally published about six months after the book. * Since publishing the book, Hufschmid has come to describe himself as a Holocaust denier and has become increasingly accusatory of 9/11 researchers, seeing most as part of a vast "criminal network" of Zionists.	amazon.com
