A zoo in Indonesia’s East Java Province recently welcomed seven rare baby Komodo dragons, and more are expected to hatch over the coming months.
The zoo artificially incubated the eggs, hoping to give them a better chance of survival, away from the dangers of preying lizards.
The zoo collected 21 eggs from two female Komodos, but only 7 hatched.
The zoo has been successfully conducting artificial incubation of Komodo Dragon eggs since the 1990s.
There are 10 more eggs under close watch that are expected to hatch at the end of March or April.
The latest seven Komodo dragon babies hatched on March 10 bring the total number in the zoo's collection to 63.
Baby Komodo dragons weigh roughly 5-6 ounces each, but can weigh up to 220 pounds when full grown.
They are listed as endangered species due to the death of egg-laying females, poaching, human encroachment, and natural disasters.
