Growing up in the midwest in the 1950s and 60s, my father like so many others, had always believed that human beings were superior to nature. It was an idea that had come from the enlightenment, that humans were somehow separate from nature, that we could not only dominate it, but had a responsibility to do so.

VTA’s inherited agreement with the west valley cities requires that Highway 85 median to be reserved for Light Rail. VTA is looking to renege on the agreement and replace the median with another auto travel lane. The expansion is proposed at the expense of air quality and noise in the corridor. Fortunately Cupertino, Saratoga, and Los Gatos are taking action.

Progressivism is all but dead today. In John Muir’s time, progressivism was on the on the rise and his successes were due in no small measure to the progressive political atmosphere. The contrasting trajectories of Muir’s and McKibben’s environmental accomplishments illustrate clearly that in order to make significant gains in environmental protection, we need to support a broad-based progressive resurgence.
