NCRS Showcase

Red Cedar Writing Project

The Red Cedar Writing Project is Michigan State University’s site of the National Writing Project. Their Spartan Writers’ Camps are summer writing camps for high school, middle school and elementary school students. Each year, 17 sections of writers’ camp are offered, registering a total of 300 or more students through the NCRS. As a participant in the pilot phase of NCRS, they report that the system has helped them eliminate approximately 40-hours of manual processes. They have also been receiving numerous positive comments from the general public using the system to register for the 17 initiatives being supported by NCRS.

My Horse University

My Horse University (MHU) is an award-winning national online horse management program for horse enthusiasts. It’s based at MSU, one of the top U.S. universities in equine science and management. Founded by the MSU Department of Animal Science, MSU Extension and MSU Global, this program offers equine education courses and resources that can be tailored to achieve horse management goals. MHU launched its first online course in 2006. Since then, it has provided nearly 1,000 course offerings to learners ranging from high school and college students to adult horse enthusiasts. Non-credit offerings currently supported by NCRS include online courses, live webcasts, recorded webcasts, DVDs and other tangible goods. For more information, visit www.myhorseuniversity.com.

Basic Life Support

Also a pilot participant, the Learning and Assessment Center at Michigan State University, a collaborative effort between the Colleges of Human Medicine, Nursing, Osteopathic Medicine and Veterinary Medicine at MSU, offers American Heart Association Basic Life Support (also known as “CPR”) courses. Courses are open to MSU students, faculty and staff as well as those in the community. Non-credit offerings supporting by NCRS include five courses targeting a range of participants from health care providers to public safety officers to any individual who wants to be able to respond to basic first aid emergencies. All Basic Life Support courses are taught face-to-face, either at the Learning Assessment Center or on-site for participants.
