Laws haven’t kept deadly pathogens out of meat, poultry
Millions of pounds of contaminated meat and poultry still reach – and kill – consumers because of flaws in the system of industry self-regulation and federal oversight

More than 7,500 federal meat and poultry inspectors work in 6,077 slaughterhouses and processing plants nationwide. Every piece of meat and poultry in stores carries their seal of approval, yet nearly 9 million pounds of meat and poultry was recalled last year for fear it could sicken consumers.
