BIG PLAYERS MUST STEP UP

Cesc Fabregas has had to face a chunk of the criticism for Chelsea’s poor form this season. The Spaniard feels that this is undeserved, but it is largely down to the impact that he had at the club last season.

Fabregas was an instrumental figure in Chelsea winning the league title – after a gap of five years – last season. He came up with a record 18 assists – most of them in the first half of the season – and a fair number of goals. This time around, he has scored only once and created only one goal for the team.

CHELSEA STILL STRUGGLING

Chelsea’s recent 1-0 defeat against Stoke City was the seventh defeat of the season for the blues. They are already out of the League Cup and are huge doubts to qualify for the Champions League next season. The collapse comes just six months after the club won the Premier League title and this remains the most fascinating aspect.

Defender Branislav Ivanovic has admitted for the first time that the club did not react well to winning the title. The league success came after a period of five years. Even though the club was successful in other competitions during this time, it appears that the success has gone into the heads.

Willian reckons victory against the Ukrainian side Dynamo Kiev

Willian reckons victory against the Ukrainian side Dynamo Kiev the other day in a European clash shows that Chelsea is starting to find a bit of confidence again.

The Blues beat Kiev 2-1 with Willian playing a major role in that, converting a free kick at a crucial juncture.

Willian has actually been somebody, who unlike most of the other Chelsea players, has not come for much criticism recently. He has produced the goods.

The Brazil international has made 16 appearances in Chelsea jersey across all competitions in the season so far and has put the ball into the net 5 times which is not a bad performance at all.

Talking to the press yesterday, he said, “I think it’s all falling in place for us. Confidence wise, we are getting there and the results are only going to help. It was important to try and secure three points over here and we will have to capitalize on this win now. It’s not been easy at all for us this summer, but, we’ve always believed we can turn the tables.”

Chelsea is now occupying the second position in the standings in the Champions’ League Group G and they are well and truly in race for making it to the pre quarter final round of the competition. Continue reading

FABREGAS – COSTA IS ANGRY

Cesc Fabregas, as many other people, also believes that Diego Costa did not deserve the ban that he was handed for his demeanour in the Arsenal game that had taken place earlier this month.

Costa has, however, completed his ban now and is all set to return to take on Porto in the European Cup. According to Fabregas, his countryman is annoyed at the moment and he has every reason to be in that sort of mood. Fabregas said, “You are never happy when you are treated that harshly and Diego is no different. He feels he’s hard done by and he is probably right.”

Chelsea and the search for Champions League glory

Chelsea picked up a vital point away at Dynamo Kiev last week to provide a much-needed boost to their Champions League aspirations. Although the Blues have struggled in the early stages of the season, Jose Mourinho’s men have two home matches remaining in the group stages and will be quietly confident of securing the victories that they need to book their place in the knockout stages of the competition. The Blues have reached the last-16 or better in 11 of the last 12 seasons, with the 2012-13 campaign as the lone exception.

Mourinho’s men have one of the most talented squads in Europe’s elite club competition but they have failed to reach the same heights of last season. In the 2014-15 campaign, Chelsea won the Premier League title but slipped up against Paris Saint-Germain in the last-16 stage of the tournament. Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has made it clear that the Champions League is his favourite competition and, after winning the domestic title last season, it is likely that the Russian will be targeting a third major success on the continent.

Unfortunately for the Blues, they simply aren’t playing well at the moment and may need a drastic change in strategy if they are to climb out of the slump that they currently find themselves in. The likes of Eden Hazard, Cesc Fabregas, Nemanja Matic and John Terry are struggling to inspire confidence and have all been in and out of the team this season. While these four stars were imperative to Chelsea’s title victory last term, they have perhaps been their most disappointing players at the beginning of the new campaign.

However, these are world class players and the likelihood is that all four stars will turn their form around. Every player goes through a bad patch but the truly great footballers come out of their blip stronger and hungrier for success. With the exception of Terry, Chelsea’s world class talents are likely to improve in the near future and will help the club to climb up the Premier League table, as well as challenge for Champions League success. Footballers don’t suddenly become bad players overnight – that’s a fact.

Compared to last season, Chelsea’s home supporters have been starved of goals. According to figures at Fortune Frenzy the average Blues season ticket holder is paying £71 for every goal at Stamford Bridge – an insane statistic. In the Premier League, Mourinho’s side have netted 15 times this term but their defensive displays have cost them dearly. The likes of Gary Cahill, Kurt Zouma and Terry have all been given the opportunity to showcase their talent and make the central defensive position their own but they have all failed to inspire confidence.

Realistically, the domestic title is out of Chelsea’s hands now. It’s a long season but they are just too far behind to mount a serious challenge. The Champions League, however, could be on the cards. While they cannot compete toe-to-toe with Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona, they can set-up to defend and this is one of their greatest traits. With a bit of luck and vast individual improvements, they stand a great chance of reaching the latter stages of the competition.

IF CHELSEA ARE BORING, WHAT DOES THAT MAKE EVERYONE ELSE?

Chelsea have faced accusations of being ‘boring’ this season, but there is more than a hint of jealousy in the words of those critics who are quick to try and undermine the efforts of a dominant force.

The Blues have been that in 2014/15, leading the Premier League title charge from pillar to post to all-but wrap up a first top-flight crown in five years.

Jose Mourinho’s men may have already done enough to etch their name back onto English football’s most prestigious piece of silverware but, given that Arsenal’s game in hand is not due to be played until the middle of May, the job can be finished in style this weekend against Crystal Palace. Thibaut Courtois made his return to Chelsea

In June of 2014, Thibaut Courtois made his return to Chelsea as the Belgian goal-keeper ended his loan deal with Athletic Madrid and sparked a shockwave in Stamford Bridge and the Premier League as the 22 year old player is arguably one of the best players of the top tier league with sublime performances in every match he plays in.

The remarkable season that Courtois is going through is great news for Chelsea as the club has only conceded 26 goals in 30 matches but at the same time this also brings negative consequences for other players who have had to be sidelined for the majority of the season and Petr Cech is the player who has had his spot snatched away from him.

Rumors are now claiming that Chelsea are prepared to sell Petr Cech and have placed a price tag of €10 million for the experienced shot-stopper who is being linked with a move away from Stamford Bridge.

Petr Cech has a contract with Chelsea which extends until the end of the 2015-16 season but if the contract could be terminated depending on the situation of the player and the club. If Mourinho wants to sell Cech, then he could be offloaded and it does seem like Cech will be exiting Stamford in the summer transfer window as the player has already stated on a number of occasions that he wants to join a club where he can have a secured regular starting spot.
