The Faculty of English Language and Literature is by far the largest English Department in the UK, with over 75 permanent postholders, a further 70 Faculty members, 900 undergraduates and 300 postgraduates. The Faculty has a very distinguished research and teaching record, covering all periods of English Literature.

Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships

Leverhulme Early Career Fellowships are designed to support scholars at a relatively early stage of their academic careers (defined as having been viva’ed no more than five years prior to the closing date), but with a proven record of research. Fellowships are tenable for three years on a full-time basis. Further details about the scheme are available at: www.leverhulme.ac.uk/funding/ECF/ECF.cfm

Listen to Professor Simon Armitage's Inaugural Lecture as Professor of Poetry

 

Simon Armitage gave his first lecture as Professor of Poetry to a large audience at the Examination Schools on Tuesday 24 November 2015.

Professor Armitage opened with an account of 'the parable of the solicitor and the poet', in which a poet pays a solicitor for legal advice. The solicitor then asked the poet to review some poetry he had written - and did not offer to pay the poet.
