The Time I Ran Out of Gas
Before Christmas, I ran out of gas for the first time.
All things considered, I was very lucky. It was just me in the car, and the engine died in a covered parking structure, in a remote corner with few cars. Plus, it was the middle of the day, during the week before Christmas, so not a lot of people were out and about anyway.
Could have been a lot worse.
The reason why I ran (more...)
Automatic install of JDeveloper
Yesterday I enhanced the script to also do an automatic install of Java and adapt the environment settings to have the JDeveloper settings specific placed in C:DataJDeveloperSOA.
To run the script you should have the following files placed in one folder (for instance c:tempsoabpm):
Selfies. Social. And Style: Smartwatch UX Trends
From Antiques to Apple
“I don’t own a watch myself,” a great parting shot by Kevin of Timepiece Antique Clocks in the Liberties, Dublin.
I had popped in one rainy day in November to discover more about clock making and to get an old school perspective on smartwatches. Kevin’s comment made sense. “Why would he need to own a watch?” I asked myself, surrounded by so many wonderful clocks from across the ages, (more...)
AppsLab Research in 2015
As we exit 2015 and enter 2016, I’m reflecting on all that happened in AppsLab and looking forward to the future. Our 2015 research spanned the spectrum – from attitudinal to behavioral, domestic to international, controlled to ad hoc, low to high tech, and many more research tactics. I won’t bore you with stats and an exhaustive list of studies. Rather, here is a brief recap of some of our research and interests.

Oracle as the new IBM — has a long decline started?
When I find myself making the same observation fairly frequently, that’s a good impetus to write a post based on it. And so this post is based on the thought that there are many analogies between:
- Oracle and the Oracle DBMS.
- IBM and the IBM mainframe.
And when you look at things that way, Oracle seems to be swimming against the tide.
Drilling down, there are basically three things that can seriously threaten Oracle’s market (more...)
Basis Goes Social: Bragging Rights Baby!
I love the new social side of the Basis fitness and sleep tracker. I’ve already documented by device setup travails earlier and how I was eventually rewarded for my efforts.
At the time, I and other QS heads rather smugly enjoyed the lack of social media sharing capability. After all, it’s quantified “self.“ Self. Got it?
Yet, I admit I was a fan of fitness selfies and sharing them on social media. So, after (more...)
Fashtech Update: Vector Watch Rocks Fashion, Form and Function
The Vector Watch is a British design, with development and product offices in Bucharest and Palo Alto. It looks awesome, something that can be worn by the most fashionable people around, and packs a mighty user experience.
The sophisticated, stylish appearance of the watch screams quality. Perhaps this is the qualitative self to match the quantitative side of our sense of well-being, but regardless, the Vector Watch tells us that wearable tech is coming (more...)
Glance Across Time
Seems like Queen Elizabeth I may have been they wearable tech pioneer of sorts, as alluded to by Chris Horn (@chrisjhorn) in his Irish Times article, History of wearable devices links watches and Fitbit range. That this innovative device was a clock, or watch should come as no surprise. Timekeeping devices have been evolving for milenia, and the story of the wristwatch is fascinating.
Where better to explore glanceable UIs now the UX du jour (more...)
Remote debugging on SOA 12c.
This is enabled by default in the DefaultDomain of the SOA QuickStart.
But how to do so with a remote server? It is not enabled by default on seperate servers.
A moment ago I saw this tip on the community forum, which states that you have to enable it by adding the (more...)

Readings in Database Systems
Mike Stonebraker and Larry Ellison have numerous things in common. If nothing else:
- They’re both titanic figures in the database industry.
- They both gave me testimonials on the home page of my business website.
- They both have been known to use the present tense when the future tense would be more accurate.
I mention the latter because there’s a new edition of Readings in Database Systems, aka the Red Book, available online, courtesy of (more...)

Transitioning to the cloud(s)
There’s a lot of talk these days about transitioning to the cloud, by IT customers and vendors alike. Of course, I have thoughts on the subject, some of which are below.
1. The economies of scale of not running your own data centers are real. That’s the kind of non-core activity almost all enterprises should outsource. Of course, those considerations taken alone argue equally for true cloud, co-location or SaaS (Software as a Service).
2. (more...)

Dunkel Patterns
Just returned from Berlin, where, amongst other things, I visited restaurant called Dunkel.
Dunkel Unsicht Restaurant is where you are seated, served, and eat in total darkness (Dunkel means dark in German).
To begin with, you order from a set menu, in the light. Then, your assigned server appears, asks you to put your hands on their shoulders and to follow you downstairs into the darkness of the restaurant itself.
Into total blackness. (more...)

It’s been nearly three weeks, and I’m finally getting around to sharing the highlights of our OpenWorld 2015. Enjoy.
