NDP leader Jack Layton has died
NDP leader Jack Layton has died after a recurrence of his cancer. A great loss to Canada, we may never know how great.
Later: nice accolade from Paul Wells. Also the PDF file of the letter left by Layton and I see on Facebook that people are planning a memorial vigil tonight at the Cartier monument starting at 8.
Later again: a nice anecdote on Metafilter in a thoughtful thread there.

150 years after “responsible government” entered Canada’s vocabulary, Jack Layton finally drove us away from adversarial politics towards consensus, transparency and debate. We have a responsibility to continue his work on improving our democracy.

It’s very very sad news.

It’s a real shock. Even sick, he seemed more alive than most people.

”My friends, love is better than anger. Hope is better than fear. Optimism is better than despair. So let us be loving, hopeful and optimistic. And we’ll change the world.” – Jack Layton, August 20, 2011.

Just passed by the vigil. It was a pretty good turnout, maybe around 1,000 people, some speakers, nice vibe. Beautiful night. Felt like the planet was honouring Jack.

Yes, I was there. Radio-Canada has a brief report on the scene.

Nice, perfectly timed piece by Christie Blatchford in the National Post.
It seems that some people have lost sense of the word “decency”.

@Ryan, I know the piece you mean but I’m not dignifying it with a link.
It used to be that conservatives prided themselves on their old-school manners and civilization in the face of a wave of lefty anarchism. These days they’re more notable for pissing on any manifestation of finer feelings.
