Effective Advert: Children Of Paranoia by Trevor Shane
The other day this mysterious postcard appeared in my mailbox:
The front says All Wars Have Rules and at the bottom of the front it says childrenofparanoia.com. The back of the postcard just had my address. So I thought to myself: Hmmm. I wonder what this is? I bet it’s a book! And sure enough when I went to the website it was for a a new book, Children of Paranoia by Trevor Shane. I should be a detective, right? Haha. But anyway my point is that this postcard was a great piece of advertisement on the publisher, Dutton’s behalf. The postcard contained just enough information so that I could guess it was for a book and intrigued me enough that I went to the website. If it had given anymore information (i.e. a synopsis), I might not have gone to the website. I might have just filed it under books I need to check out when the release date is closer. Instead they got me to the website, got me to read the synopsis which was on the first page of the site, and got me to pre-order the book with the handy pre-order options on the same page. Now, that’s an effective advert!
Here’s some more info on the book that grabbed my attention:

From the Publisher:
Since the age of eighteen, Joseph has been assassinating people on behalf of a cause that he believes in but doesn’t fully understand. The War is ageless, hidden in the shadows, governed by a rigid set of rules, and fought by two distinct sides — one good, one evil. The only unknown is which side is which. Soldiers in the War hide in plain sight, their deeds disguised as accidents or random acts of violence amidst an unsuspecting population ignorant of the brutality that is always inches away.
Killing people is the only life Joseph has ever known, and he’s one of the best at it. But when a job goes wrong and he’s sent away to complete a punishingly dangerous assignment, Joseph meets a girl named Maria, and for the first time in his life his singleminded, bloody purpose fades away.
Before Maria, Joseph’s only responsibility was dealing death to the anonymous targets fingered by his superiors. Now he must run from the people who have fought by his side to save what he loves most in this world. As Children of Paranoia reaches its heart-in-throat climax, Joseph will learn that only one rule remains immutable: the only thing more dangerous than fighting the war. . .is leaving it. (Synopsis provided by Dutton.)

This one hooked me as well. I didn’t pre-order the book, but the postcards put this book on my radar big time.
