GlueX Detector

An overhead view of Hall D, the newest experimental hall at Jefferson Lab, where progress is being made installing new equipment. Taking shape is the detector to be used by the GlueX physics collaboration. The large red and green equipment is the solenoid. Easy Does It

Two Accelerator Division staffers carefully position a spherical electrode on its base in the injector test facility. The electrode and insulating base are part of an electron source, which generates electrons for use in particle accelerators. The elements are being tested for high-voltage applications.

First Magnet Installed

Technicians have installed the first magnet (silver vessel) for the new Super High Momentum Spectrometer in Experimental Hall C. The SHMS is a new detector system that is being assembled for Jefferson Lab’s 12 GeV Upgrade of its Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility. The newly installed quadrupole magnet will be used to focus sprays of sub-atomic particles from experiments into detectors for measurement.

Governor McAuliffe helps celebrate 12 GeV Upgrade

Before about 250 people at Jefferson Lab, Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe referred to the lab as a “gigantic economic engine” that generates $217 million a year in economic activity in Hampton Roads. McAuliffe was speaking at a September 26 celebration marking a Department of Energy approval that will allow accelerator operations to re-start. Detector Installation Continues

Detector Installation Continues

The new CLAS12 detector is taking shape in Experimental Hall B. Here, the CLAS12 torus magnet central hub (silver hexagonal pipe supported by blue stanchions) is installed, along with the red-and-black Forward Time-of-Flight detectors. This layer of detectors in CLAS12 will measure the time of arrival of the particles produced in experiments, allowing physicists to identify the particles. Behind Time-of-Flight detector, two calorimeter modules are mounted that together will be used to identify electrons, photons and neutrons.
