Welcome to ME
Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at UTSA!
The Department of Mechanical Engineering offers programs at both the undergraduate and graduate level that prepare students for future challenges and opportunities.
Our programs include a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering (an ABET accredited undergraduate program), a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, a M.S. in Advanced Manufacturing and Enterprise Engineering, and a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, which is a joint effort with Southwest Research Institute.
In addition to these four degrees, we also offer a certificate in oil and gas area.
We have multiple undergraduate scholarships and research opportunities available to our undergraduate students. Graduate fellowships are also available for both our masters and doctoral students.

Kiran Bhaganagar receives Army Grant to Detect Chemical Terrorist Attacks using Drones
Post date: 11/02/2015
UTSA researcher, an expert on turbulence Kiran Bhaganagar gets funded by Department of the Army US Army Contracting Command, Edgewood Division to conduct aboriginal research that provides fast response for detection of terrorist chemical attacks. Among the weapons of Mass Destruction, chemical warfare is probably one of the most brutal created by mankind. To date, we do not have a technology in place that can predict the direction and path of these chemical agents. Kiran Bhaganagar, Associate professor of Mechanical Engineering with team members Daniel Pack, Chair and Professor of Electrical Engineering and Hatim Sharif, Professor of Civil Engineering are developing novel simulator that solves 4-D nonlinear equations of turbulence, atmospheric physics and chemistry simultaneously, and integrated with robotic drones. This novel ideas uses the data from drones at a single location, feeds this information into the complicated fluid-chemistry simulation model to track the location and the path of the chemical agent. All this needs to be done in less than few minutes. The simulations will be performed on Bhaganagar's in-house supercomputing cluster "Himalaya". The award of $260K also includes plan to expand this existing supercomputer by adding 19000 GPU cores.
