Content and context |
Joanne Limburg was born in London in 1970 and educated at schools in London and at King's College, Cambridge, where she read Philosophy (B.A. 1991, M.A. 2000). She took an M.A. in Psychoanalytic Studies at the University of Kent at Canterbury, and has worked as an Associate Lecturer at the Open University. She received an Eric Gregory Award in 1998, and was a Royal Literary Fund Fellow at Magdalene College, Cambridge, from 2008 to 2010.
Limburg's full-length volumes of verse, published by Bloodaxe Books, are 'Femenismo' (2000; shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best First Collection) and 'Paraphernalia' (2007; Poetry Book Society Recommendation). A prose memoir, 'The Woman Who Thought Too Much', was published by Atlantic Books in 2010, and a pamphlet collection of poetry, 'The Oxygen Man', was published by Five Leaves Press in 2012.
Drafts of poems by Joanne Limburg.
Mostly word-processed or typescript, with and without manuscript annotations, and some wholly manuscript. Many files contain notes apparently made as part of the compositional process, and other documents of various kinds occur in the files, often on the reverse of the drafts or notes. The titles of many of the poems were altered in the course of writing.
Some of the drafts were created in Stanmore, Middlesex; West Bridgford, Nottinghamshire; Edinburgh; and Cambridge.
Presented by Joanne Limburg, April 2012.

Further information |
The drafts were accessioned in files assembled by Limburg, with the latest draft positioned uppermost in each file. They have been removed from the original cellophane pockets and placed in archival envelopes, but no sheets have been transferred between files. The poems from 'Femenismo' and 'Paraphernalia' are arranged in order of publication in the respective volumes. The uncollected and unpublished poems are arranged in chronological order. This catalogue was prepared by John Wells of the Department of Manuscripts and University Archives, May 2012. |
