Open for Business: Duman Home, 159 5th Avenue

spacer Tuesday, October 27, 2015 at 8:47AM

spacer

A new home goods store opened last week on the corner of Fifth Avenue and St. Johns Place. Called Duman Home, it's the second location of a shop that owner John Duman opened on Court Street in 2013.

The charming boutique sells plenty of items for the home, ranging from sheets, pillows, and towels to tote bags, Fishs Eddy tableware, candles, and bathroom items. Aprons and some other kitchen tools are also for sale, and come the Holidays there will also be ornaments and decorations on offer.

With the sprawling Laytners closing recently after a nearly six year run on Union Street, there was a major hole in the market for high-quality home goods in the North Slope, and this fills the gap nicely. You might even recognize a familiar face or two from the Laytners staff here if you shopped there regularly.

Open for Business: Five Spice, 52 5th Avenue

spacer Monday, October 26, 2015 at 8:36AM

Today brings the grand opening of Five Spice, a casual Vietnamese spot on the corner of Fifth and Bergen, in the spsce that was last home to Irish pub Cyprus Avenue.

While small, the space looks homey and nicely-appointed, and the menu looks like a lot of fun (click for a larger image, pardon the glare). It's more street food-oriented than the neighborhood's other Vietnamese spots, Bricolage and Ha Noi, which is okay in my book.

There are five varieties of pho ($9); summer rolls, spring rolls, and dumplings ($6); tacos in varieties including ground pork and shrimp, grilled five spice pork chop, fried clams, claypot caramel pork belly, and braised short rib (two for $8); banh mi ($7-9); and rice vermicelli salads ($10-15). The "tacos" are in bánh xèo, traditional Vietnamese pan-fried rice flour-based pancakes, instead of tortillas, owner Mike Khuu told Park Slope Stoop.

Khuu is also the owner of The Boil on the Lower East Side and Saigon Shack on Macdougal Street. According to Khuu, no alcohol will be served here because he "wants this to be kid-friendly."

El Habanero Tex Mex Coming to 'sNice Space

spacer Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at 8:32AM

spacer

It's been about nine months since vegetarian sandwich shop 'sNice closed up shop on the highly trafficked corner of Fifth Avenue and Third Street, and finally a new restaurant has been lined up for the space. Thanks to a temporary sign, we know that it'll be called El Habanero Tex Mex.

There are a handful of Tex Mex and Mexican restaurants on Fifth, including Lobo, Mezcal's, Rachel's and its new offshoot Varrio 408, Tacos Nuevo Mexico, Fatty Daddy Taco, and (Cal-Mex) Calexico. El Habanero will be jumping into a pretty crowded ring, but its has a few things going for it: Placement is prime, there's outdoor seating, and well-made enchiladas and fajitas are beloved by pretty much everybody.

There are no details out there yet that I could find, so will be interesting to see what develops.

Surfish Bistro Opening Gowanus Location

spacer Friday, September 11, 2015 at 8:34AM

spacer

It's been more than four years since Surfish Peruvian Bistro opened on Fifth Avenue between Fourth and Fifth Streets, and now the successful restaurant is opening up a second location, on the corner of Third Avenue and 14th Street. Many thanks to a tipster for sending the above photo; the restaurant also posted a photo of the new space on Facebook.

The small restaurant, which is run by Chopped winner chef Miguel Aguilar, has remained somewhat under the radar but is quite popular and has been well-reviewed. The menu includes a wide variety of ceviche, tapas, and specialties like paella, pork adobado, and lomo saltado.

According to the Facebook post, the new location will be opening in November, and will be "bigger and better."

American Restaurant, "Sushi Speakeasy" Coming to 166 Flatbush Avenue

spacer Wednesday, September 2, 2015 at 8:39AM

spacer

A new multi-format restaurant will be opening at 166 Flatbush Avenue, between Fifth and Pacific, next door to Shake Shack, DNAinfo reports. The owners also run a Michelin-starred Tribeca sushi restaurant called Sushi Abazu and a host of bars throughout the city.

The 3,700 square foot restaurant will have a unique concept: A New American restaurant and bar will be located on the ground floor and roof, a "speakeasy sushi bar" will be located on the basement level. Abazu, which is accessed via an upstairs Japanese restaurant called Daruma-Ya, has a similar conecpt.
