• Results of DNA analysis indicate that ALB specimens collected from Boston are genetically similar, but with slight variation, to ALB specimens from both Worcester and New York. The analysis did not rule out a foreign introduction as a possible source. Program staff are continuing to investigate potential pathways of introduction, but the source of the Boston infestation may never known with certainty. (07/30/2010)

• In the wake of Hurricane Irene, the Dept. of Conservation and Recreation has extended hours this week at its wood disposal sites in the ALB-regulated areas in Worcester and Boston. • ALB Awareness Month Event 8/10/2011: Join us to mark the proclamation of August as Asian Longhorned Beetle Awareness Month. The Lieutenant Governor will read the official proclamation, followed by special guests who will recognize the efforts of MDAR, DCR, USDA, and other partners in the eradication and education efforts addressing the Asian Longhorned Beetle problem in the Worcester region. Event will be held at Green Hill Park in Worcester beginning at 9:30am.
• The regulated area in Greater Worcester has been expanded to include a portion of Auburn, due to recent finds in the southern tip of Worcester, for a total of 98 square miles. • The Massachusetts ALB Cooperative Eradication Program will host two public meetings in the Boston/Brookline area to discuss upcoming plans to chemically treat trees in an effort to prevent the spread of the beetle:

• Governor Declares August to be Asian Longhorned Beetle Awareness Month:
  It was just over a year ago that the Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) was first reported by Worcester resident Donna Massie. Since that time, local, state, and federal entities have joined together to fight the infestation of an invasive pest that has caused negative impact to the City of Worcester and placed the Commonwealth as well as the entire Northeastern United States on high alert. To this end, the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) has worked with the Governors Office to declare August as Asian Longhorned Beetle Awareness Month, with the goal of encouraging every resident in the Commonwealth to learn to identify and report sightings of this invasive insect.
