  • View an updated map of areas in Worcester, Holden, Shrewsbury and West Boylston where infested trees are set to be removed. (01/11/2011)
  • Results of DNA analysis indicate that ALB specimens collected from Boston are genetically similar, but with slight variation, to ALB specimens from both Worcester and New York. The analysis did not rule out a foreign introduction as a possible source. Program staff are continuing to investigate potential pathways of introduction, but the source of the Boston infestation may never known with certainty. (07/30/2010)
  • Asian longhorned beetle confirmed in Boston, at Faulkner Hospital. A 1.5 mile regulated area around the infestation is now in place. Read the official press release here, download a map of the regulated area here, Order to Supress and Control here. (07/06/2010)
  • In the wake of Hurricane Irene, the Dept. of Conservation and Recreation has extended hours this week at its wood disposal sites in the ALB-regulated areas in Worcester and Boston. Please dispose of all host wood properly and ensure that hired tree workers have received compliance training. Call 866-702-9938 if you have any questions. (08/29/2011)
  • ALB Awareness Month Event 8/10/2011: Join us to mark the proclamation of August as Asian Longhorned Beetle Awareness Month. The Lieutenant Governor will read the official proclamation, followed by special guests who will recognize the efforts of MDAR, DCR, USDA, and other partners in the eradication and education efforts addressing the Asian Longhorned Beetle problem in the Worcester region. Event will be held at Green Hill Park in Worcester beginning at 9:30am.
  • The regulated area in Greater Worcester has been expanded to include a portion of Auburn, due to recent finds in the southern tip of Worcester, for a total of 98 square miles. Download a map here, and read the 10th Amended Order here. A public meeting will be held in Auburn on Thursday, May 12 at 6pm, at the Pakachoag Church, 203 Pakachoag St. (05/10/2011)
  • The Massachusetts ALB Cooperative Eradication Program will host two public meetings in the Boston/Brookline area to discuss upcoming plans to chemically treat trees in an effort to prevent the spread of the beetle:
    • Thursday, April 28, 7pm-9pm: Faulkner Hospital Auditorium, 1135 Centre St., Boston
    • Saturday, April 30, 10am-12pm: Franklin Park Clubhouse, 1 Circuit Dr., Boston

  • The USDA has released an Environmental Assessment for dealing with ALB were it to impact Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex Counties. Comments are due by May 7th, 2011. You can also download the legal notice. (03/2011)
  • The ALB Eradication Program has produced maps showing neighborhoods in Worcester, Boylston, Holden, Shrewsbury, West Boylston, and Boston where trees will be treated with preventative pesticide applications. Public meetings were held mid-March to discuss these plans (03/11/2011):

  • The Massachusetts ALB Cooperative Eradication Program will host four public meetings in the Greater Worcester area to discuss upcoming plans to chemically treat trees in an effort to prevent the spread of the beetle. Each meeting will be held from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on the following dates:

  • Governor Declares August to be Asian Longhorned Beetle Awareness Month:
    It was just over a year ago that the Asian longhorned beetle (ALB) was first reported by Worcester resident Donna Massie. Since that time, local, state, and federal entities have joined together to fight the infestation of an invasive pest that has caused negative impact to the City of Worcester and placed the Commonwealth as well as the entire Northeastern United States on high alert. To this end, the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources (MDAR) has worked with the Governors Office to declare August as Asian Longhorned Beetle Awareness Month, with the goal of encouraging every resident in the Commonwealth to learn to identify and report sightings of this invasive insect.
