Gall wasps and woodpecker damage on bur oak

We have recently received some bur oak samples in the Schutter Diagnostic Lab that have sustained serious woodpecker injury. The tops of the trees have been stripped of their bark, and many wasp larvae are situated right underneath the bark. For more information see the attached file.
Chilling Injury on Ornamentals

The attached article has very useful information and photos of cold injury to new leaves on ornamental plants. Plants do not have to be subjected to freezing temperatures; but damage can result from rapid temperature changes for critial time periods to newly emerging leaves. It is not unusual for us to receive samples in June for damage that actually occurred in May. So be aware and watch plants for early symptoms. Linnea Skoglund
Reports of Woolly Apple Aphids

The Schutter Diagnostic Lab has received two samples (Missoula Co and Lincoln Co in Libby) in the last couple weeks of pear and apple branches with some swellings or pseudogalls around the buds and bases of the twigs. These swellings appear to match those made by the woolly apple aphid. See the attached fact sheet for detailed information about this important pest. Insect Diagnostician Joins Schutter Diagnostic Lab

Laurie Kerzicnik recently joined the Schutter Diagnostic Lab as the insect diagnostic and IPM specialist. She has the following to say about herself. She can be reached at the Schutter Lab or at 56 Marsh Lab, 406-994-5704.
"I just joined the Plant Sciences and Plant Pathology Department at Montana State University as the new Insect Diagnostician and Assistant IPM Specialist. My background is with IPM and spiders as pest control agents in agroecosystems. I received my Master’s and PhD in Entomology from Colorado State University. In addition to my educational background, I did a lot of entomology and arachnology outreach to K-12 schools, the community, and to growers. I traveled around to schools with tarantulas, spiders, mantids, scorpions, and cockroaches for hands-on learning. I love extension and serving as a link between science education and the community. I look forward to working with faculty, extension agents, growers, and the community."

A free forum on new technologies in pesticide education, weeds and insect management will be offered Thursday, Dec. 5, in Bozeman.
The event will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Comfort Inn. Those who wish to attend should pre-register by contacting Montana State University Pesticide Education Specialist Cecil Tharp at ctharp@montana.edu or (406) 994-5067.
The program will be worth four private applicator credits, as well as three commercial/government credits in the categories of aerial, dealer, ag plant pest, forest pest, ornamental and turf, right of way, and regulatory weed. There will also be credits for the Certified Urban IPM Practitioner program.
Emerald Ash Borer in Colorado (1 October 2013)

The emerald ash borer (EAB) has been confirmed in Boulder, Colorado. This is the western-most occurrence for this invasive pest. It has not been found in any state bordering on Montana. The Montana Department of Agriculture maintains a monitoring program through the use of traps set throughout the state. You may direct your questions to Cam Lay (406-444-3790) and Ian Foley (406-444-9454) until the end of October when the Schutter Diagnostic Lab insect diagnostician will be available (405-994-5150).

[vtdigger.org 10 June 2013] -- A herbicide that tainted Green Mountain Compost (GMC) last summer can no longer legally be used on Vermont pastures. But compost companies still worry the chemical will find its way into their products. The GMC compost, made at the Chittenden Solid Waste District facility in Williston, damaged or killed some broadleaf garden plants, such as tomatoes, costing the district at least $800,000. The cause of the contamination was found to be aminopyralid. That agent is found in Dow weed-control products Milestone and Forefront and it apparently entered Green Mountain Compost in manure from horses that consumed feed treated with aminopyralid products. Milestone is used to kill up to 85 plant varieties. The discovery was the result of many months of forensic work by CSWD, the state Agency of Agriculture, the Environmental Protection Agency and pesticide giant Dow Agrosciences. The identification of aminopyralid as the cause of the compost contamination led to Dow voluntarily changing its labeling of the chemical, ruling out its use on pastures in New England or for any purpose in New York. Any violation, or off-label use, is a federal offense. The new restrictions are aimed at keeping aminopyralid out of horse feed, specifically hay. Horse manure is often a key ingredient in local compost.

Attached is a copy of the Utah State University Seasonal Turfgrass Pest Update, Summer 2012. There is a very interesting article on turf and tree competition for water and nutrients. It is just as applicable to Montana as it was to Utah and to Minnesota, the original source.
I have not seen rust on turf this summer. It was too hot and dry. However, we have diagnosed many samples with white grubs and some with billbugs.
