Ocean SAMP Update Activities

  • In 2010, the Rhode Island Ocean Special Area Management Plan (Ocean SAMP), comprehensive regulations outlining Rhode Island's process for ensuring the management and protection of its ocean resources and activities, was adopted. In 2015, the University of Rhode Island Coastal Resources Center, which facilitated plan development for the Rhode Island Coastal Resources Management Council (CRMC), once again engaged partners and the public in an Ocean SAMP process -- this time, a required effort to update the original document with new scientific data and enhanced policies. The work is enabling Rhode Island and the Northeast region to make wise choices for long-term enhancement of shared ocean resources, including fisheries stocks, transportation channels, and the siting of offshore renewable energy facilities.

Update Activities include:

  • Revision of the Ocean SAMP
  • Recreation and Tourism Chapter
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Creation of a Summary Report

Ocean SAMP Update Sponsors

  • Northeast Regional Ocean Council (NROC)
  • The University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography (URI GSO)
