Now that The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has released to DVD and Blu-ray, the hype train can continue to move full-steam ahead with the launch of such tie-in games as The Hobbit: Armies of the Third Age, which is now available for browsers and mobile devices.

The works of J.R.R. Tolkien are no stranger to the world of video games. The strategy title, Guardians of Middle Earth lets players duke-it-out in online arena battle while Lego Lord of the Rings whisks players away to a land where humor is king and adventure is built one brick at a time.

Announced last fall, however, The Hobbit: Armies of the Third Age is a strategy game available from developer Kabam, through iOS and Android or Facebook. A free-to-play tactical battle affair, Third Age lets players control an army of dwarves, elves or orcs, as well as legendary heroes like Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the bird-poop-haired Radagast the Brown.

Were eager to bring The Hobbit: Armies of the Third Age to the millions of Middle-earth fans who engage online, said Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment Senior VP of Digital Games, Grag Ballard. The Facebook and browser-based portals are key locations where The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit film fans can regularly engage with Middle-earth in a shared interactive environment.
