Some rehearsal footage for Rob Marshall's Nine has appeared online and it gives a great feel for the film. Well, actually I think I have to correct the title because I'm not overly taken with the idea that it's just rehearsal footage, there are some clips in there but this is a professionally produced teaser.
The film is based on the award winning Broadway musical and the semi-autobiographical story of Federico Fellini's 8 and a half that centres on film director Guido Contini as his life seems to reach a critical point, and it all seems to hang in the balance around the key women involved in his life.
Those nine women include his wife, played by Marion Cotillard, his mistress, played by Penélope Cruz, his film star muse, played by Nicole Kidman, his confidant and costume designer, played by Judi Dench, an American fashion journalist, played by Kate Hudson, the whore from his youth, played by Stacy "Fergie" Ferguson, and his mother, played by Sophia Loren.
The footage here makes the film look gorgeous and lavish, just like a Las Vegas stage musical, and mixing real behind the scenes footage with the seemingly scripted behind the scenes for the big stage piece has produced something very clever in terms of a teaser.
It's a great cast there too, and not only are the ladies looking lovely, but Daniel Day Lewis gets to stand at the end in black and white and look thoughtful. Here it looks as though the ladies are the leads and Lewis is going to have to play off of them, and that will certainly be a good thing for the audience.
Here's the footage from Yahoo Movies:
