Maxwell Faculty
The 154 members of the Maxwell faculty are distinguished not only for their research and publications, but also for their excellence in teaching. The roster includes seven Guggenheim Fellows, five American Council of Learned Societies Fellows, 15 Fulbright Research Fellows, 11 National Endowment for the Humanities Fellows, one MacArthur Fellow, and one World Food Prize Laureate. In a typical year, Maxwell faculty members publish dozens of books and monographs and hundreds of book chapters and journal articles. Their work provides up-to-date material for the classroom. A steady stream of grants from private foundations and public sources flows to Maxwell faculty members and research centers. Graduate students become deeply involved in such scholarship, initially as apprentices and ultimately as partners.
Teaching at the Maxwell School is highly regarded. Faculty members work closely with students as mentors and as advisors. During the past two decades, 37 Maxwell faculty members have been honored with Syracuse University’s highest award for teaching and scholarship, the Chancellor’s Citation for Exceptional Academic Achievement. Syracuse University also recognizes teaching excellence in the annual naming of two Meredith Professors; in only the past few years, nine Maxwell teachers have received this honor.
Many professors have practical experience in the world of public and international affairs. Their teaching effectively combines theory with practice and brings fresh insight into current issues in public policy and public life. With their extensive networks, faculty members play a strong and influential role in placement and career counseling.
