The Utah Hunter Education program helps you learn essential safety skills and develop practical techniques useful for hunting. Completion of a basic hunter education course is required to obtain a hunting license in Utah if you were born after Dec. 31, 1965. All courses offered by the Utah Hunter Education program are nationally recognized.

The following is a step-by-step walk-through that will help you register for a hunter education program course. Choose a course to learn more about it.

• Hunter education

  This course is required to obtain a hunting license in Utah if you were born after Dec. 31, 1965. The course includes instruction on firearm safety, hunter responsibility, wildlife management, survival and more. You have two options for completing this course:

  • Traditional/Classroom course

  • Online course and in-person field day

• Furharvester education

  This course is required to obtain a furbearer license in Utah if you were born after Dec. 31, 1984. The course includes instruction in safe and responsible trapping. The course teaches proper trapping technique and device usage. You have two options for completing this course:

  • Traditional/Classroom course

  • Online course and in-person field day

• Bowhunter education

  This course is not required to obtain a bowhunting permit in Utah. This is a comprehensive course for national bowhunter certification that is required to bowhunt in Idaho, Montana, Alaska and several other states.

• Extended archery orientation

  Successful completion of the Extended Archery Orientation Course is required to participate in the extended archery hunts.

  • Registration Certificate. You may purchase a certificate at any division office, licensed agent.

• Where to practice your shooting
• Download targets

  The shooting test consists of live firing with a .22 rimfire rifle at targets 50 feet from the shooter.
