The Story of The Food Monkey

The Food Monkey (fūd mŭng’kē):

  1. v To run around town and do crazy things with food
  2. n The creature on your back that drives you to seek out culinary adventure
  3. n The Premier Boston Food Blog that will eat no evil!

It was many and many a year ago in a kingdom by the sea, that my buddy (and FM co-founder) Matt and I were young and impressionable undergraduates at Columbia University in New York City.

As our respective herculean course loads required us to spend many hours working long after the sun had sunk below the horizon of the Upper West Side, we would often find ourselves awake at 3am with too much energy and too much work to do. So, hopped up on Ollie’s cold sesame noodles and scallion pancakes, we would need some way to take a break to offset the antsiness that only a double all-nighter can cause.

Inspired by a segment we saw on TV called “Night Monkey” in which people would go out into the city in gorilla costumes reeking minor havoc and silliness, Matt and I started taking regular post-crepuscular runs to the cry of “Night Monkey!!”

Now the two of us also happened to be major foodies and would go out into the city with reckless abandon trying, poking our heads in places we didn’t belong, trying to find the best food NYC had to offer. These adventures became the act of “Food Monkey” the verb.

Before long we racked up so many adventures, we decided to write them down to keep track of all the restaurants we’d been to and recipes we had made. Thus, The Food Monkey (the noun) was born as a small poorly coded site on blogger that nobody ever read.

As the years passed, Matt moved to Philly to do his MBA and I moved back to my hometown of Boston to work at Mass General Hospital and shortly thereafter to start my neuroscience Ph.D. Things were fairly inactive in the land of The Food Monkey for several years until I decided to start things up again in full force making The Food Monkey what it is today.

The Food Monkey strives to be one of the best Boston area food blogs, and offers thoughts about cooking, food news, restaurant trends, and any other epicurean issues that happen to strike its fancy.

The Food Monkey also has restaurant reviews, primarily in the Boston area, with reports from NYC and other locations we happen to visit.

The Food Monkey will always discuss what tastes good, but not always what is in good taste.

It took USA Today for me to find you – what’s up with that? To all that’s bacon and not evil. We’re in Somerville. Love the blog.
