Lexington BBQ Festival — May 18th and 19th

spacer

I thought I knew good BBQ. I really did. But until I tried ribs and chicken from a master on the competitive BBQ circuit–and subsequently got a smoker of my own–I was truly ignorant of what BBQ could be. No mass-produced BBQ can touch the stuff.

On May 18th and 19th, come see how the pros do it at the Lexington Battle Green BBQ Festival:
lexingtonbbqbattle.com

There will be live music, spectacular BBQ, and local craft brews to be enjoyed. Moreover, an official KCBS BBQ competition will taking place, so you can see how it’s supposed to be done.

No shigging allowed spacer

The festival is located at 1557 Mass Ave in Lexington:

O.N.C.E. In Valhalla — January 25th

spacer

The good people from Cusine en Locale are doing another O.N.C.E. (One Night Culinary Event), this time Viking-themed, at the Somerville Armory, on Jan 25th.

From the press release:

ONCE in Valhalla is a 10 course, all local, theatrical feast, at the Center for Arts at the Armory in Somerville- 191 Highland Ave. Doors open at 7pm to a Slumbrew beer tasting and open oyster bar, followed by 9 more courses of fantastic, locavore, Viking inspired fare. Expect delicious dishes, like cheesey oat porridge, roasted leg of lamb and mead poached pollock.

Green River Ambrosia will be on hand with their delicious mead to taste and purchase, and there is a Slum Brew Beer pouring for the first hour. The bar will be open for the first hour, and afterwards they’ll serve beer, mead and wine throughout the event for cash sacrifices.

The location, Valhalla, is modeled on the hall in Viking heaven (Asgard) where honored dead guests went to dine with the gods, in Norse mythology*. In our Valhalla, guests feast at the table with Norse Gods and Goddesess, are served by Valkyrie and are entertained by live music and performances, directed by Allegra Libonati, of the American Repertory Theater

Tickets are $100/person, and can be purchased online here.

$10 Wine, Cheese, and Charcutierie in Providence

spacer

While I typically cover only local events, anything that features my favorite Providence, RI restaurant, La Laiterie (think a mom and pop version of Eastern Standard + Formaggio Kitchen) is worth going seeking out. I remember having sweet smoked duck tongue on a waffle there once, which was as sublime as it was unusual.

This summer, you get a glass of wine, some cheese, and a house-made charcuterie item for $10. Pair this with a night at strolling around Waterfire, and you should a great evening.

From the press release:

WHAT:
With a New England bistro (La Laiterie) and attached artisanal cheese/gourmet foods shop (Farmstead) tucked away in Providence’s Wayland Square, Matt and Kate Jennings have been churning out nationally-recognized rustic farmhouse cuisine and homespun baked goods for almost 10 years. A two-time nominee for a James Beard Foundation award, Matt joins his wife Kate in the kitchen, creating dishes that have received praise from Food & Wine, Bon Appétit, Travel + Leisure and Saveur, as well as the Cooking Channel’s “Unique Eats” TV program.

This summer, whether you’re in Providence to see why Travel + Leisure readers recently named it “America’s Best Burger City,” or you’re here to experience the sparkling downtown art installation known as WaterFire, a stop at La Laiterie for Patio Pours is a casual and accessible way to experience the Jennings’s incredible dedication and commitment to honest, seasonal, handmade food.

Pull up a chair at the sidewalk patio and enjoy a night of:

Unusual Pours of Wine
Sample a glass from La Laiterie’s unusual and small-batch producer wines, most of which are rarely available outside the bottle. A few examples of these hard-to-come-by-the-glass wines are Stefano Massone Masera Gavi, Valdesil Montenovo Godello and Glatzer Blaufrankisch.

Housemade Charcuterie
See why Matt Jennings is not only a three-time Cochon 555 champ, but also considered a “renowned meat artist” by the Washington Post. His housemade charcuterie includes unique creations such as Pig Ear Bacon, Hoof & Snout Terrine, and Fennel & Preserved Orange Cotechino.

Farmstead’s Curated Cheese Selection
From spirit-washed originals like the Drunken Providence (a Gouda-style cheese from Narragansett Creamery that is washed with Thomas Tew Rum from Newport Distilling Co. and aged for two months in Farmstead’s street-level cheese cave), to the imported Vento D’Estate (an Italian sheep and goat’s milk cheese washed in prosecco and wrapped in grasses, herbs and wildflowers), adjacent cheese shop Farmstead carries a wide variety of cheeses curated by Owner/Master Cheesemonger Matt Jennings and his team of three cheesemongers.
