The Arts in Kirkwood

We are lucky to live in a City with so many ways to explore culture and the arts. There’s the St. Louis Art Museum, the Missouri History Museum, and the Muny, to name just a few, but there are also many artistic and cultural opportunities right here in Kirkwood! For creative types, artists, or those that simply love to draw, Kirkwood Public Library is having a Library Card Design Contest to celebrate the library’s 90th Birthday! The contest is open to people of all ages, with submissions accepted between January 23 and March 20, 2016. The theme is the 90th Birthday, so we’re looking for designs that feature some aspect of the Library. You can pick up a submission form at the circulation desk, or any of the reference desks.spacer

If you’re looking for a creative outlet for your young child, or want them to experience the tactile wonders of paint, glitter, glue and more we have First Art for ages 18 months to 4. These will take place on several Thursdays – February 4, March 3, and April 7, at 10:30 am. Your Kirkwood Public Library also has an Art Gallery where artists can submit their work to be exhibited throughout the year. Exhibits are chosen by a staff committee, with submissions accepted once each year. Portfolios can be accepted via physical or electronic application. Please find more information on how to apply here. This month’s featured gallery artist is the Fine Art Photography class from Kirkwood High School. You can view their pieces throughout the month of January. If you want to browse our collection for books and more on art, look here.

Throughout the Winter and Spring Kirkwood Library will also have a Music in the Library series, which will feature a different performer on a Sunday each month from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.  On January 24 enjoy the St. Louis Spelmanslag.  On February 21, hear the Songs of Africa Ensemble.  On March 20 the Wee Heavies will perform,  On April 17, we will hear from the St Louis Bella Corda. Financial assistance for this project was provided by the Missouri Arts Council. For more great music like this, check out our collection here.

Laumeier Sculpture Park will have a Free Family Day on Sunday, February 21 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m., where you can come and be inspired by the park’s natural environment, their temporary exhibitions, and their permanent collection. There are also structured activities for creating art with a variety of materials.

Kirkwood High School will have a Best of Broadway/A Taste of Jazz vocal concert on Saturday, January 23, at 7:00 p.m., in Keating Theatre at the high school.  A Random Acts of Comedy show is scheduled for January 28 to 30 at 7:00 p.m., in the Blackbox Theatre at the high school. For tickets and more info you can visit kirkwoodschools.org.

For a full listing of ARTS activities in and around Kirkwood, be sure to sign up for the monthly Arts Calendar, which goes out on the first of each month via email.  To sign up, send an email to:  Arts@KirkwoodMO.org, with “Sign me up for the Arts Calendar” in the subject line.
