Joining Research and Practice:
Social Computing and Information Science
October 19-24, 2007
Hyatt Regency, Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Come to Milwaukee to expand and enrich your network by attending the ASIS&T 2007 Annual Meeting, Joining Research and Practice: Social Computing and Information Science.

Web 2.0 and social computing are changing the way people use information for work, play, research, and everyday activities. Sponsored by ASIS&T, the premier society for information science, the 2007 Annual Meeting is devoted to the discussion of Social Computing and Information Science. More than sixty sessions of contributed papers, panel discussions, poster sessions, etc. have been planned. They will address a wide variety of topics, ranging from tagging, online communities, information seeking behavior, web log and transaction log analysis to research directions, education, and ethical practice for information professionals in the new world of social computing.

  • Two plenary sessions have been planned. On Monday morning, Ms. Anthea Stratigos, co-founder and CEO of Outsell, the leading research and advisory firm focusing on information and publishing industry, will address the overall trends, impact of social computing and web 2.0 to the information industry. On Wednesday, Dr. Clifford Lynch, Director of Coalition of Networked Information and long time member and former President of ASIS&T, will tie everything together, and discuss what these all meant to information science and information professionals.
  • A conference wiki and blog will be set up on the ASIS&T web site prior to the meeting. Check it out for:
    • Travel tips: members from local chapter and nearby areas can post tips on the best (cheap, fast, best scenic) ways to enjoy your stays in Milwaukee. Perhaps the best coffee and beer places near the conference hotel, too.
    • Special Interest Groups (SIGs), Chapters, alumni organizations: use the wiki to organize your group gatherings.
    • Session organizers: the space allotted on the preliminary program may not be enough to give a fair description of your program. Why not use the wiki and blog to describe your sessions more in-depth, without giving away the actual content.
    • Create AM 07 community: lets create a community of all AM 07 participants, blog your notes and thoughts.
  • Book donation: this is a First for the annual meeting. Bring one new or slightly used book on information science or relevant topic, ASIS&T will collect them and donate them to a selected information science program in Africa. Thanks to University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, School of Information Studies, the School will underwrite the shipping and handling of book donation for this year.
  • On Sunday evening, there will be an expanded Welcome Reception. In addition to enjoying delicious hors d'oeurves and drinks with your colleagues, each Special Interest Group and Chapter will be represented with their own table at the reception. This will be a great opportunity to find out what the SIGs are all about, what Chapter events may be happening in your local area, and a great way to become involved and make YOUR desires heard.
  • When attendees check-in at the Annual Meeting, you will notice an extra large name tag. Be prepared to tag yourself and be tagged by others during the Meeting!
  • Last, but not the least, the vibrant city of Milwaukee. A few sights near the conference hotel include: Milwaukee Public Museum, Discovery World at Pier Museum, central branch of Milwaukee Public Library, Riverwalk and Lake Michigan, etc.
