Plein Air Easton Roundup from Sara Poly

Here’s Sara Linda Poly’s roundup of the week of painting at Plein Air Easton…

Wow, what a week! I am so tired, but happily so.

A special aknowledment must go to Nancy Tankersley,  who was the spark that started this wonderful event with her total dedication, energy and foresight. For several years she worked to make sure the event was solid, and then finally just a few years ago, felt she was able to enter and be accepted in what she started.  She owns the South Street Art Gallery here and is an exceptional painter.  This week she painted a very large portrait outside on her model’s front porch that was really inspirational!!!!

Two artists to watch are Valerie Craig and Tracey Frugoli, who’s unique and competent visions always add to any show.
There is just so much excellent work here.

I think the judge, Stephen Doherty did a great job with the awards and gave an excellent lecture on why he chose them, very thoughtful.  I learned a lot and felt he was fair and honest though he said, and I agree, he needed a lot more walls and awards because the caliber of work was so high and there were so many deserving of awards.  It’s the first time I have met him and was very impressed.
Prizes are listed on the Plein Air Easton website, or will be soon.

The artists should be commended greatly on their amazingly good attitudes and work considering the sweltering heat.

Saturday the main Quick Draw was a fabulous showing of work all up and down the main street of Easton, blocked off for the occasion.  Anyone can do this event, so it’s huge, and some lucky folks got the shady side!  I saw a lot of sales it seemed  and the street was totally filled with people.  They also have a kid’s art event, which brings many families out. This town really rallies to this event.

On Sunday morning the award winners did a special quick draw at the location where the Awards Brunch was held, and a special auction sold all the pieces done that day immediately after the meal.   It was so hot most artists showed up at sunrise to paint.  There was a special Vanishing Landscape Award given that morning to Jason Tako for a lovely morning marsh scene done while standing in the water!!!! That was a GREAT idea, wish I had thought of it!
Tim is sorting out the fabulous photos he took over the weekend and will send some shortly.
The press seemed to be around a lot so you can link from there to articles and tv videos.

All the best, Sara

Plein Air Easton Collector’s Show

July 23, 2011 Sara Linda Poly describes the exhibit at the Academy Art Museum in Easton at the Plein Air Easton competition…

Wow! What a night!  The special ticketed event, The Collector’s Preview Party was held again at the Academy Art Museum, the best venue I have seen for a plein air event. It was beautifully catered and was sold out with a long wait list!  The show will open for the general public at 9:00 this morning and I’ve heard lot’s of folks that didn’t get tickets will be coming.  Sales looked very good and lots of folks had replaced their original two that were allow for the competition with their replacements (we are allowed 8 of those)  Spirits were up in spite of the hot weather and all the artists I spoke to said they had a good week. The caliber of the art was over the top and the judge said it was one of the best displays of plein air painting he’d seen.
In my next update I will send the list of prizes and the photos of the quick draw.

FYI the Star Democrat, the local newpaper had a couple stories, sorry I don’t have the link.

All the best, Sara
