Past accomplishments
2014-2015
Laundry
- Worked with WASH and Housing to improve Laundry system after the change over to automatic charge laundry units caused significant issues.
- Organized surveys to find out residents concerns and complaints regarding laundry changes.
- Met with Housing multiple times to give feedback on WASH’s attempts to fix the laundry services at both complexes.
- Fought for free laundry days for both complexes when laundry had been out of service due to the WASH changes.
- Organized a free laundry week at both complexes as a token of appreciation for Resident’s patience during the changes and laundry outages.
- Worked with Housing to make sure Laundry rooms were more secure and that all doors and windows could be fully closed and locked.
Community Center
- Diaper Station added to Storke.
Community Events:
- Sponsored RA run events such as Cinco de Mayo, Maintenance Appreciation Lunch, and the Fall Harvest Festival.
Resnet
- Maintained communication with Resnet and residents during the end of the Storke fiber optics
- Doubled available bandwidth at West Campus.
Financials
- Reduced printing costs by switching printing vendor.
Renovations
- Pushed for Housing to reduce uneven pavement tripping hazards (by concrete grinding) throughout FSH.
- Informed residents that they can request Maintenance come out and place liquid ant traps that are more effective than the dry variety that are normally used.
- Facilitated repairs of Storke and West Campus playgrounds.
Day of Caring
- Organized Day of Caring at West Campus and Storke Gardens where residents weeded and did minor repairs followed by a free lunch and planting of several citrus trees at Storke.
- Hosted a childrens mural where parents could bring their kids to enjoy painting together, finished mural (which was finished by a West Campus resident) is displayed at the West Campus “Tot Lot” by the front laundry room.
- Garnered donations from local businesses to help support this event.
Gardens
- Added signage explaining Garden policies.
- Worked with Grounds Department to overhaul the Edible gardens at Storke so that residents would be able to pick herbs and fruit freely in a more organized and self sufficient manner.
Housing Relations
- Asked housing to add additional staff hours to West Campus Office during construction, as it was only open from 8am to noon on weekdays.
- Hosted a “Town Hall” meeting at West Campus with Housing executives in order to discuss resident questions and concerns regarding ongoing construction projects.
Growing Times through SBCC CLL
- Ensured that residents had access to as many of these classes, free of charge, as long as they applied for a scholarship prior to attending.
- Informed residents of the classes being available and when the scholarship deadlines are due.
Online FSH Swap Group
- Worked with Housing and RAs to open an online “swap shop” for items that residents did not want to take over or were too large to leave there.
Theft
- Made sure that CSO sweeps were happening properly to discourage theft in both complexes after a string of thefts from front porches and laundry rooms.
Redwood tree Removal
- Verified that the Redwood trees that were slated for removal from West Campus were truly beyond saving before allowing housing to remove the trees.
- Drew attention to West Campus speeding problems and lack of speed limit signs, also held a speed protest to alert residents.
2012
- Worked with the WASH laundry vendor to stop a planned increase in rate for washer and dryer costs, requested and implemented better signs explaining wash times for different settings, and set aside washers for diaper and pet use.
- Requested and publicized resident/housing meetings about second vehicles and visitor parking changes, advocated for residents in order to block changes until a better policy was ready.
- Maintained contact with ResNet to ensure timely implementation of new wiring project for faster internet speeds.
- Obtained key access for all residents to Storke Community Center.
- Supported housing at Fall and Spring Carnivals as well as Maintenance Appreciation Lunch.
- Supported new West Campus Swap Shop by purchasing a donation bin.
2011 – 2008
- Averted West Campus mail crisis (when USPS was going to stop delivering mail to the complex).
- Raccoon problem: implemented daily feces cleanup.
- Repaving of the bike path between Stork and Santa Ynez.
- Garden security.
- Installed a water fountain at Storke playground.
- Road repaving at both Storke and West Campus.
- Annual events: pirate party, cowboy hoedown, pancake breakfast, etc.
- Organized monthly meetings with housing administration.
- Supporting swap shop.
- Santa Ynez gym membership.
- Postponed bike abatement until residents were giving proper notice.
2007
- Light was installed at Storke mailbox.
- Protective gate installed near Storke II #794.
2006
- Helped rodent issues at West Campus.
- Helped with safety driving concerns by placing signs and speed bumps.
- We have saved residents over $200 a year by succeeding in our attempts to reduce or eliminate various proposed fees by Housing (e.g., parking fees, rent increases).
- We monitor the Housing budget process, which determines rent. Keeping our living cost affordable is our number one priority.
2005
- Service vehicle parking was established outside the complex, so the trucks will not be driving on the sidewalk.
- Stopped the use of Vikane for termite abatement.
- Closed down the Ocean Meadows driving range that had been hitting golf balls into West Campus FSH.
- New West Campus playground installed and better road signage.
2004
- West Campus drainage has been improved.
- Keeping moldy apartments offline.
- Our sidewalks are safer from truck traffic.
2003
- A swallow nesting control system was implemented at West Campus.
- There is improved road signage.
2002
- The playground at Storke was renovated with new equipment and landscaping.
- Worked with Housing administration and staff to create Community Standards that reflect the needs of residents as well as safety, maintenance and environmental requirements.
2001
- Formed committees which give residents the opportunity to share their ideas and have input into important issues such as parking, playground/children’s issue, safety, and Storke renovation.
- Rules for our patios and yards are clear, consistent, and fair.
- New contract kept limits on rental increases and 42-day notice of any rent increase.
- Speed bumps were installed on Mesa Rd.
- Cleaner dumpster areas.
2000
- Negotiated a $12,000 ($50.00 per household) settlement with the University to reimburse Storke I residents for the hardships they endured during the three days of electrical outages in November 1999.
- Better visibility at the West Campus entrance.
- There is now a much shorter wait to get a FSH apartment.
- The proposal for a new $200 transfer fee has been dropped.
- We have successfully worked with Hendry Telephone Products to reduce noise from the factory adjacent to Storke.
