Physics Department Goals
- Achievement of Research 1 status.
- Doubling of the external funding (for research, curriculum development and outreach) in the next 3 years.
- Establishment of federally funded centers with emphasis in local strengths in materials physics (for example MRSEC and EFRC) and planetary science.
- Establishment of similar state funded centers of excellence through collaboration with other Florida universities.
- Full realization of a forward-looking undergraduate program intermixing traditional physics with research-based pedagogy.
- Conversion of all traditional introductory physics laboratories to activity-based learning studios in the next 1-3 years.
- Further integration of research and education in the curriculum.
- Doubling of the number of majors in the next 3 –years.
- Hiring of additional quality faculty to strengthen further programs in existing areas of departmental emphasis and to improve the faculty-to-student ratio in the department.
- Recruitment of increasingly excellent domestic and international graduate students.
- An increase in the number of graduate students to 100 within the next 2 years.
- An increase the number of graduate teaching assistants by 12 within the next 2 years, in order to enhance the quality of undergraduate education.
- An offering of several more service/GEP courses which enhance our visibility and student credit hours.
- Maintenance of the high quality of departmental staff through appropriate remunerations and other incentives.
- Strengthening of departmental IT, machine shop and experimental shared facility resources.
