YOU DID IT!

It has been a great year for Leave No Trace and the outdoors. And your role has been critical. With your involvement, see what Leave No Trace accomplished through THE BIG THREE: education, community and research.

EDUCATION

Conducted 521 hands on trainings, workshops and events reaching an estimated 9.5M children and adults: including 200 workshops in schools for K-12 students through our Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Trainer Program.

Provided advanced Leave No Trace training for 4,000 people: these volunteers impacted another 56,565 others.

Expanded Educational Offerings: Following the successful launch of PEAK Online, the Center updated the existing Online Awareness Course and launched the first-ever Master Educator Online Refresher Course.

Exposed over 10M people to a national public service campaign to stop cigarette butt litter: Teamed up with the American Legacy Foundation on a new campaign to combat the growing Leave No Trace issue of toxic cigarette butt litter. The public service announcements and press campaign hit TV, cable, film and radio outlets on Earth Day.

83 major, national and regional news outlets with a collective reach of 65,000,000 people ran Leave No Trace Center’s story regarding the natural resource defacement at Goblin Valley in UT.

COMMUNITY

Enlisted 400 Leave No Trace Community Partners to take action: collectively impacted 350,000+ people with relevant, place-based Leave No Trace information in 2013.

Volunteer State Advocates reach record numbers: The Center's 49 State Advocates collectively reached 106,428 outdoor enthusiasts with direct, meaningful Leave No Trace information.

Provided Critical Grants through the Community Stewardship Initiative: The Center awarded CSI Grants to 16 Community Partners who, in turn, directly brought Leave No Trace awareness to 21,958 children and adults.

RESEARCH

Worked in conjunction with Colorado State University, State University of New York at Cortland and University of Idaho on Leave No Trace research initiatives. Findings include:

  • When an outdoor enthusiast understands how Leave No Trace protects the environment, they are far more likely to practice Leave No Trace on future outings.
  • The Leave No Trace PEAK Program improves kids’ understanding of the appropriate decisions and actions needed to Leave No Trace.
  • The advanced Leave No Trace training is an effective educational tool to protect the environment. Three months after Master Educator Training, participants showed an improvement in Leave No Trace knowledge, ethics, confidence and judgment.
