Every once in a while I like to fantasize about a life in the country—a life where I wake up early to get fresh eggs from my chickens and spend my days tending to a garden full of fresh fruits and vegetables. The keyword in all of this is ‘fantasy’—the whole waking up at the crack of dawn thing wouldn’t really work in real life (What can I say? I’m not a morning person.). I still can’t help but romanticize the concept of a flourishing, fecund piece of land in my backyard where I could grow my own food and occasionally spend days digging in the dirt. Though I don’t see myself buying a plot of land anytime soon, I think that this spring I would like to take some very small steps towards having a very small garden. Perhaps I could plant a small batch of basil that could sit nestled in a pot on my kitchen windowsill? Or maybe I could even attempt a small vertical garden on my balcony that wouldn’t yield food, but just some beautiful foliage to admire. Either way, I think this spring is the perfect time to test out my green thumb.—Jenny Gumbert
