Hello dear sweet souls, January is almost gone and with the workshops “Passport To Journal” in Austin, TX and “Alterations” at home in Redondo Beach, CA, it was a most exuberant month. A fantastic beginning to what promises to be a prolific and altered year for all of us. I just feel it! And I wish it!!spacer

I have created The Journaling Game last month and am so happy it was received so well and people are feeling inspired by them. I now have the card sets in stock and plan to make sure they will be in stock at all times.

Visual Journaling in Southern Cal. January 21, 2016

This weekend…waiting to alter and be altered. spacer The practice of Visual Journaling cultivates insight into the nature of the creative process and its multiple meanings. Enriched by self trust and acceptance, paper, paint, words, pen, and line entwine to make expressive complex intimate books. It’s all about one’s willingness to reveal vulnerability and rawness for the sake of true creative freedom. Experiencing honest and joyous journeys takes precedence over producing beautiful outcomes. Ultimately, visual journaling is about depicting the fluidity of life, about effortlessly carrying one’s self from one place to another.

Another aspect of journaling that can not be denied is the constant element of change that occurs in the process; obvious, tangible, sensorial, and physical change of our pages with each and every choice we make and less obvious and tangible, more hidden, obscure, and mysterious, change that occurs when we allow honest and courageous expression to take place on our pages.
In order to assist us in that task we’ll be using an existing old book, one that has type, print, images, illustrations, and photographs that are calling to us. That would be a book of your own choice, one you are willing to honor, and yes, also to alter, to change. The many meanings of alteration; change, adjustment, adaptation, modification, will be explored in both tactile and metaphorical ways. When change is brought forth, healing almost always follows.

The Journaling Game & Giveaway December 13, 2015

THE JOURNALING GAME is out and a deck of cards is ready to be given away.spacer

But first let me tell you how it came about….

A few years ago I was teaching in a beautiful art retreat in the mountains, a place where the joy of creating didn’t stop at the end of the class but continued into the night.

Retreat buddies gathered in their cabins to journal together. I started noticing that it wasn’t that easy for anyone to be in a group setting and have ideas how to begin, continue, or end their pages.

Then an idea came to visit me. How about if each of us took a turn in giving the rest of us a prompt. It was not only working out but it was contributing to a light, non-judgmental, fun evening.

Since that day it was known to be The Journaling Game and inspired many gatherings to be joyously creative and lively.

So I’ve designed a deck of cards based on that idea. Each card has a close-up taken from one of my journal pages on one side and on the other, not really a technique but more of a prompt, a starter, a process that can take you in many directions if you run with it…it has an opening to a new expression. It offers many opportunities for you to explore and become inquisitive about, to expand your emotional and creative horizons.spacer

The box reads “Sparks of inspiration for individuals who work solo or in a group setting with materials mostly found at home, in nature, and on the street.”

Tiny Books, Big Expressions November 18, 2015

spacer It’s been a few years since I made such a book from one sheet of watercolor paper. I learned how to do it from the incredible Tracy Moore at Teesha Moore’s “Play” retreat up in Port Townsend in Washington State. I made two of them. They are really tiny, about 2 x 2 1/2 inches. I was proud of myself and was super enthused holding them in my hands and imagining their interior potential. Starting there and continuing on my way home on the airplane with only Peerless Watercolor Papers, a Niji brush, and black and white gel pens, with my buddy Brian Kasstle, I filled one up with faces, and titled it My Mini Face Book. It holds a lot of humor, in some pages.spacer So I then came up with the idea to teach a workshop, but needed my friend Elise Amour to join me in two 2-day workshops in Southern California where we both live. She would teach how to make these books using the coptic stitch and I would teach funky ways of filling up these pages… that happened in the last two weekends…we all, teachers and those attending had such a spirited time. spacer Since then both times after class I continued and finished both books made in class. I enjoyed this process so much…seeing how a theme emerges. There is something so intimate, raw, and real that happens in such a tiny format. You can begin a book and finish it in a few intensely enlivening hours. And boom, you are moved by your own creation, that something out of nothing again. It’s a sensual, tactile little thing, a microcosm of one person, in all that she loves to create.

Here are the two books:

The first one resides mostly in a rusty, heavy, soil-like realm, and does not relate to words very well. And yes, Paul got in there cause he just appeared and was given as a gift to this book.spacer spacer spacer And the other a Mini Face Book of mourning…dispirited faces. A tribute to “Paris” and other wide-spread losses….expressing the thought that change comes in small formats, sometimes too small to contain big sorrows. It was instigated by little paper-mache faces that were gifted to each one of us by Lydia Velarde, one of the kind souls who attended the workshop. The manner in which I created the faces were inspired by Marlene Dumas’ art which for me epitomizes the essence of visual journaling: puddles of water, minimal ink, less control, more raw expression.spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer spacer

I do it all for the purpose of mending…

I would be ecstatic to win any of your workshops but if I had my choice it would be The Visual Journal as Sanctuary in Portland, A visual Journal….a place for Independence Star Idaho, or The Visual Journal as Sanctuary in Redondo Beach, CA.
