The importance of the surface toning or the stain finishing to bring your wood relief sculpture to true life can be huge. It can literally make or break a piece. You can hurt the whole look of a good wood sculpture with poor finishing or you can make a lesser wood sculpture look amazingly so much better by employing correct principles of toning and finishing.  In this course we explore and become familiar with the straight forward principles and techniques of shading, enhancing and enriching a relief carved wood piece. In the spirit of working in harmony with the wood, we seek to coax out of the piece it’s most beautiful expression. So come join us for this workshop and learn how to truly let your work “sing”!

Art Development Strategies with Craig Hone

Daily – 9:00 am – 5:00pm

Course Fee – $375.00

Instructor: Craig Hone

We realized a long time ago that in order to create truly significant art we had to learn the “fundamentals”! These fundamentals are the true building blocks to producing great art. They are a set of  “awareness’s” and skills that need to be developed for you to be truly empowered and free to create instinctively, thereby infusing your work with mastery and virtuosity. In this time spent with Craig,  you will have demonstrated to you each of these concepts and with your participation you will then learn how to go about developing and instilling in you these vital insights and skills. This is the path to follow in our pursuit of excellence. To the degree you develop these fundamentals you transform yourself as an artist, becoming more and more capable of composing and creating masterful works in any medium.

Deep Relief Leaf Cluster with Craig Hone

[9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.]

Course Fee – $1075.00

Instructor: Craig Hone

The vast majority of my relief carving has incorporated leaves as the major part of the design. These leaves are really the visual “musical notes” that carry the overall visual ‘melody’ or gestural sweep of the piece. In this course you will carve in wood a deep relief leaf cluster as we explore the techniques and methods to create beautiful, voluptuous, life expressing leaves. We work from the original gesture layout, through the shaping and contouring to the surface treatments and final finish. As we work we pay special attention to specific leaf characteristics you will want to enhance as well as styles of expression. Our goal is to create artistic and graceful leaves that people are powerfully drawn to.

Deep Relief Wood Sculpture: Horse Head Portrait

[9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.]

$1475.00

Instructor: Craig Hone and Jeff Wolf

In our wood sculpting here at the studio we are always engaged in trying to make our art pieces have that something extra. We are continually working towards trying to have each piece we do possess that ‘masterfulness’ or that ‘X Factor’. We have found that as we work the design up in clay first, and then use that clay piece as our model for the wood carving, we achieve a much more successful work of art.

We apply this method in this course. The first day is spent with Jeff helping you complete the horse in clay. You will be getting the correct proportions and anatomy in as well as developing that sense of artistic design for the piece. Craig will then assist you as you use your model as reference to carve the horse head in wood, going through step-by-step techniques of roughing in and continually refining, through the staining and finishing until you achieve that ultimate rich and beautiful work of art. This piece will work very well as art for its own sake, or can be applied toward any architectural projects.
