“Tallulah” Screened on Sundance, Acquired by Netflix
Comic drama “Tallulah” marks the feature directorial debut of Sian Heder (a writer on “Orange Is The Black”), and offers robust starring roles for Ellen Page and Allison Janney. The film screened this weekend in Sundance, and is receiving very good reviews.
Page’s title character and her boyfriend Nico (Evan Jonigkeit) are modern-day hobos who live in a beat-up van. They drive aimlessly around the country, dumpster diving, stealing from strangers and using the gas-station credit card Nico got from his mother for fuel. But when he clears out suddenly after an argument, Tallulah, aka Lu, heads to New York to look for him at his family home near Washington Square, a palatial-by-Manhattan-standards apartment where his mother Margo (Janney) lives alone. But Nico’s not there, and Margo, still seething over her husband’s leaving her for a man, sends Lu packing without a handout.
Zach shot this film before starting the Star Trek filming, and you can see two behind-the-scenes images in our gallery that was published back then. It was announced that Netflix acquired the streaming rights of the film.

“I Am Michael” First Trailer
Our friends from James Franco Italia pointed us today a trailer for I Am Michael. Presented about a year ago at the Sundance and Berlin Film Festival, the biopic dedicated to former gay activist Michael Glatze, directed by Justin Kelly, went through a 2015 full of events at festivals around the world, but we didn’t have any news about distribution. But the film was released in December in Poland, distributed by mayfly, and with the released trailer we can look at some scenes.
Starring James Franco, Zachary Quinto and Emma Roberts, I Am Michael tells the true story of a man who denies one’s sexual orientation to embrace the faith. Glatze, co-founder of Young Gay America magazine militant, became in fact a Catholic extremist anti-gay. Check it:

“Smokefall” Press Preview
The stars of MCC Theater’s upcoming production of Noah Haidle’s Smokefall met the press at their rehearsal studio on January 7. Anne Kauffman directs the drama, which runs from February 4-March 13 at the Lucille Lortel Theatre.
The company is led by Zachary Quinto, alongside Robin Tunney (The Mentalist), Julia Garner (Grandma), Jon DeVries (The Apple Family Plays), and Brian Hutchison (Man and Boy). The creative team includes Mimi Lien (scenic design), David Weiner (lighting design), Asta Hostetter (costume design), and Lindsay Jones (Sound design).
The play is described as follows: “Magical realism collides with manic vaudeville in a family drama unlike any you’ve ever seen. The Twins swap philosophy while awaiting their birth, Beauty eats dirt and doesn’t speak, Father is about to drive away and never return, and a man named Footnote acts as our guide. Whipping from astonishing tenderness to profound humor and back again, this wholly original play uncovers the extraordinary family connections we all stretch and warp across the years but can never quite break.”
