89-year-old Woman waterboarded by Caregivers

By Andrew Zarowny

Police in Clayton County, Georgia say an 89-year-old woman was waterboarded by two caregivers, over ice cream of all things! Anna Foley, the woman waterboarded, suffers from dementia and resides at an elderly care facility in Jonesboro. The two caregivers, Jermeller Steed and Cicely Reed, allegedly got into a heated argument with Mrs. Foley about ice cream. They then locked the 89-year old woman in the shower, using a shower curtain to hold her down and restrain her wrists and arms. They allegedly then sprayed Mrs. Foley in the face with water from a shower nozzle, causing her to gasp for air as if drowning. Fortunately, a co-worker heard the commotion and reported the incident. Neither of the two women charged in this 2008 case work at the facility anymore. A trial has yet to take place.

In a week where much of the news deals with adults abusing children, as in the allegations at Penn State and now Syracuse, too, it is important that we do not forget that the youngest among us are not the only prey for violence. The elderly, too, face abuse regularly. Granted that a patient with dementia can be very difficult to deal with, even violent themselves. But there certainly no excuses for caregivers to exercise such methods as waterboarding under any circumstances. Restraining a patient for their own good may sometimes be necessary. From the information made public about this particular incident, the line of bad behavior was crossed by the attendants.

Who would possibly consider an 89-year-old woman waterboarded by caregivers? Especially over ice cream? But the Clayton County Police near Jonesboro, Georgia say that it what happened in 2008. Anna Foley, the 89-year old woman who was waterboarded, suffers from dementia and resides at an elderly care facility in Jonesboro. The police charged Jemeller Steed and Cicely Reed in the attack, which was reported by a co-worker. The two women have yet to stand trial.

Well, we can only hope that these idiots live long enough to find themselves in a nursing home that has caretakers like they were.
