Welcome to the Department of Computer Science. The department offers BS, MS, and PhD programs in Computer Science; MS programs in Software Engineering, Information Systems, and Information Security and Assurance; and a BS program in Applied Computer Science with various concentrations. The department also offers concentrations in the inter-disciplinary MS in Data Analytics Engineering and the PhD in Information Technology offered by the Volgenau School of Engineering.

Faculty in the department have research interests in networking, architecture, parallel and distributed computing, performance evaluation, software engineering, multimedia, graphics and visualization, databases, software engineering, data mining, security, information systems, artificial intelligence, computer vision, and robotics.

The Department is part of the Volgenau School of Engineering at George Mason University.

Professor Jyh-Ming Lien wins Mason Emerging Researcher Award (more)
Congratulations to Professor Jyh-Ming Lien who has been chosen as one of three Mason faculty to receive the 2015 Mason Emerging Researcher/Scholar/Creator award. This award recognizes the very best of Mason's younger scholars. Professor Lien will be presented with the award at the annual Celebration of Achievements reception to be held later this Fall.

Seven CS faculty members have now been selected for this award -- more than any other department at Mason.
Maryam Bandari Wins Best Student Paper Award at ICESS 2015 (more)
Ph.D. Candidate Maryam Bandari was awarded Best Student Paper at ICESS for the paper "Power Management in Cluster-Based Energy-Harvesting Sensor Networks through Dynamic Modulation Scaling". The paper explores the potential of adjusting the modulation levels (radio communication speed levels) of individual sensor nodes to save power, while also exploiting the capability of energy harvesting from the environment. Maryam is co-advised by Hakan Aydin and Robert Simon.
GMU RoboPatriots at RoboCup 2015 (more)
spacer Prof, Dan Lofaro (ECE) and GMU's team of students are at RoboCup in Hefei, China, preparing the RoboPatriots for competition. The RoboPatriots are GMU's team of humanoid robots which play soccer autonomously.
CS Dept Team Wins Google Award for Revamping Introductory CS Programming Courses (more)

Sean Luke Wins George Mason Teaching Excellence Award (more)
Congratulations to Professor Sean Luke who will receive a 2015 George Mason University Teaching Excellence Award. This honor acknowledges his commitment to providing students with meaningful, significant learning experiences, as well as his success in achieving this ambitious goal.

He will be honored at the 2015 Celebration of Teaching Excellence, to be held on Monday, April 13th, from 3:30pm-5:00pm at the Center for the Arts.
Yotam Gingold receives NSF Career Award (more)
Congratulations to Professor Yotam Gingold for receiving an NSF CAREER Award for his project titled "Direct Manipulation of Numerical Optimization for Structured Geometry Creation."

Eleven CS faculty members have received an NSF CAREER award, which is the National Science Foundation's most prestigious award in support of junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education and the integration of education and research.
