The Swamp #22

Transparency is just a word these days.

The Swamp #22: #Transparency, #GamerGate, #NotYourShield, #SJW, #SJWLogic, @PJBissett Guest!

Today me and Tex host P.J. Bissett of the Daily Caller, where we first talk about the growing transparency scandal here in the United States.

Next we take our transparency debate over to #GamerGate and #NotYourShield, and how game consumers are reshaping the debate about ethics in (game) journalism. We don’t get to everything, but we hit on the major points and hopefully we will get PJ back as soon as possible. But before you listen, check out my Patreon Page!

#GamerGate: Ok @Gawker, What Are You Going To Do Next?

Gawker fucked up, hard. And they are dying. No site can lose that kind of money and live. But before we go any further, let’s give you a couple of primer videos that explains what #GamerGate is all about:

I am going to be brutally honest here and admit that I don’t follow #GamerGate like I should. But that is ok, that is why God brought forth Internet Aristocrat*** into this world. Without him, I would not know of Gawker’s epic fuck-up and coming collapse:

The GamerGate movement is continuing to have an impact, since it’s now being reported that Gawker Media Group has lost advertising revenue from BMW, Mercedes, and Adobe over the alleged “bullying” of gamers.

Alleged, because #GamerGate didn’t start this fight. I want to digress here and note that Internet Aristocrat asked resently why has #GamerGate lasted so long as opposed to other internet causes. The answer is that gamers were provoked into action by SJWs and dishonest journalists. On the other hand, OWS tried to provoked Wall Street and instead pissed everyone off. Anonymous tried to provoked Scientology (and I agree it is a cult that needs to be stopped) and, aside from a few counter-protest tactics, basicly laughed at Anonymous. Inquisitr article goes on:

In the case of Adobe, it’s alleged that Gawker editor in chief Max Read, and another Gawker writer named Sam Biddle, published tweets that apparently condoning bullying of “nerds” and gamers. Although Gawker published a front-page statement saying they did not condone bullying, the damage had already been done.

The potential effect Gamergate may have on Gawker cannot be understated. Internet-only media like Gawker rely on advertisers exclusively for their income, so when major advertisers like BMW and Adobe pull out, it’s got to hurt.

According to Breitbart, Gawker’s Max Read was recently quoted as saying, “I’ve been told that we’ve lost thousands of dollars already, and could potentially lose thousands more, if not millions.”

Now Gawker is being slapped with a unrelated lawsuit:

Unpaid interns for the website Gawker.com have won a round in court in their attempt to bring a class-action suit under the Fair Labor Standards Act…

The court ruled the interns performed work similar to that of paid employees, contributed content to Gawker’s publications, moderated sections of its websites and received primarily on-the-job training. They had to follow Gawker’s general policies, were supervised in the same way as employees and received communications from management in the same way employees did. They also used the same internal communications systems employees did, were expected to work independently and received no special training or instruction. In other words, the company treated the interns just like employees in all ways except one—they weren’t paid.

Sarah Grieco notes that the real bully, is indeed Gawker:

Was Biddle’s tweet really a joke? Probably. But it’s no secret that Gawker is the bully of the internet. It regularly takes down “weaker” competitors* – the textbook definition of bullying. In the high school hallway that is the New York media scene, Gawker Media is the Biff Tannen-type, shoving whoever they want into a locker.

The art behind Gawker’s ridicule is that they make fun of people and media sites without being overtly cruel. While BuzzFeed seems to be their favorite punching bag*, The New York Times enjoys a steady stream of bashing, and Gawker writers openly hate direct competitor Vice*. Gawker is now long-established, and its snark is often smart, but it still postures like it’s the underdog, a pose that works since its enormous audience essentially looks like better-informed redditors.

Gawker depicts its actions as an internet watchdog role, an upstart taking on the bigger guys. But it really just looks jealous of competitor traffic, despite bringing in around 60 million unique visitors a month.

Also, they going after Lena Dunham* for (get this) being racist. I can think of many adjectives for Lena Dunham, but racist is not one of them.

So the next question for Gawker, what now? There’s nothing really you can do. #GamerGate has transformed into a political debate on feminism, cultural marxism, and the liberal media and you are not fighting it on those terms. And insulting your former sponsors* is not going to bring them back. You are trying to fight a shadow and it isn’t going to work. You currently have a lawsuit on your hands and I suggest you focus on that front next, before you completely lose your shirt**.

Well, see ya’ later!
