Bipolar Disorder and Manic Depression

Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depression)

If you already are not aware of this condition, bipolar disorder is "a diagnostic category describing a class of mood disorders where the person experiences states or episodes of depression and/or mania, hypomania, and/or mixed states."(Look at Sources Below)

Bipolar disorder is also known as a manic-depressive illness, which can suddenly shift a person's mood, energy, and their ability to function. As in every person, someone with bipolar disorder has their up's and down's to a much higher level. This is a very serious condition, which can lead to depression.

So who can get bipolar disorder or manic depression? Just about ANYONE, including kids, teenagers, and adolescents. If any of the signs and symptoms occur for longer than a week's period, consulting a doctor is recommended.

Although bipolar illness is a long term illness, there is hope for controlling the episodes (high and low points). Long-term preventive treatment (medication and psychosocial) is strongly suggested. Also a chart of sleeping patterns, treatment, and daily mood symptoms prove helpful. Another form of treatment that can be considered is anitdepressant medication.

Suicide, Facts, and Depression

Suicide

Thoughts of suicide is most likely the worst type of depression. Suicide is " The act or an instance of intentionally killing oneself." (See Sources Below)

Suicide is considered the highest level of depression, usually thoughts leading to death. This sign of depression was the 11th leading cause of death in the United States, taking the lives of 30,622 people in 2001 alone. It outnumbered homicide 3 to 2. 55 percent of suicides were commited with a firearm and it is said that the older the person, the more likely they are to commit suicide. This form of depression was the 8th leading cause death of males, and 19th death of females.

A sign of this disorder can range anywhere from an usual damaged relationship with a person who is close to you, poor school/job performance, or even thoughts of, or actual suicide. Major mood swings from extreme happiness to extreme irritability (or vice versa) are the most common symptoms of this manic depression. A sign of depression can also be little sleep or even unrealistic beliefs in one's ability. Other commons signs are spending sprees, denial, poor judgment, and increased sexual drive. People with manic depressions can also abuse medications, drugs, and alcohol. The signs of the depression are the about the same as those listed in the previous posts.

So what are some risk factors and possible signs of this depression?

Take a look at them:

* Previous suicide attempt(s)

* History of mental disorders, particularly depression

* History of alcohol and substance abuse

* Family history of suicide

* Family history of child maltreatment

* Feelings of hopelessness

* Impulsive or aggressive tendencies

* Barriers to accessing mental health treatment

* Loss (relational, social, work, or financial)

* Physical illness

* Easy access to lethal methods

* Unwillingness to seek help because of the stigma attached to mental health and substance abuse disorders or suicidal thoughts

* Cultural and religious beliefs--for instance, the belief that suicide is a noble resolution of a personal dilemma

* Local epidemics of suicide

* Isolation, a feeling of being cut off from other people

(See Sources Below)

As to most depressions, there are solutions. Suicide has prevention strategies as well. The NCIPC came up with this one-"This strategy results from collaboration among several federal agencies (including CDC), coalitions, community-based organizations, practitioners, and other partners. As conceived, the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention (NSSP) requires a variety of organizations and individuals to become involved in suicide prevention. The NSSP emphasizes coordination of resources and the application of culturally appropriate services at all levels of government--federal, state, tribal and community--and in the private sector. The NSSP represents the first U.S. attempt to prevent suicide through such a coordinated approach. Information about NSSP is available from the Department of Health and Human Services website."

Depression Medication, Help for Hopelessness and Unhappiness

Many people who experience depression take medication to help them feel better and overcome their depression. Medication can be very helpful to such individuals, helping them to rid themselves of the feelings of hopelessness and unhappiness. Studies have found, furthermore, that medication is even more effective when partnered with a supportive environment and good therapy. The two together can help restore feelings of well-being, and help overcome depression.

There are many ways to go about getting medication for depression. However, it usually requires a trip to a doctor and a referral to a psychiatrist or psychologist. Only someone who is specifically trained to diagnose mental conditions states should prescribe depression medication. Periodic visits to someone who can listen can also be helpful in dispelling depression. This is also where having a good support system comes in. Friends and family can be very helpful, if they are supportive. Such support is more effective than medication alone.

Unfortunately, there is another form of medication for depression. By using alcohol and illegal drugs, many people "self medicate" themselves for depression. Many of them do not even realize that they are depressed. All they know is that they feel bad, and the only way to feel better is to get drunk or engage in illicit activities. Self medication is quite common because many people just assume that life is bad, and the weekends were made for getting smashed or high. They feel good while on the alcohol or drugs, so they think that nothing is wrong, other than life in general.

Additionally, self medication allows depressed people to relieve their depressed feelings without the stigma of visiting a "head shrink." For many people, going to someone who is supposed to treat mental conditions would be admitting that there is something wrong with the mind. That is a hard thing to overcome, especially since few people want to advertise that they have mental problems. So it is understandable that they would prefer to just feel better in their own way.

The problem with self medication, though, is that it does nothing to break the cycle of depression. In fact, it only adds to the depression. Once the effects of the alcohol or drugs wear off, the person often "crashes," feeling worse than before. The person feels worse, and the only way to feel better is to get drunk or high again. And the cycle perpetuates itself. Sometimes it becomes bad enough that the behavior is not just a weekend occurrence, but expands to disrupt work and family life during the week.

Medication, when administered by a professional, can be a helpful tool in overcoming depression. Self medication through alcohol and illegal drugs, however, is destructive and rarely does it help someone overcome depression. And it adds the problems associated with addiction on top of the problems of depression. Feelings of depression should be explored by people qualified to help you overcome your depression. This way, proper help and appropriate medication can be found to aid you as you move out of depression.

Signs of Depression

Signs of Depression

Clinical Depression is "a psychiatric disorder characterized by the inability to concentrate, insomnia, loss of appetite, feelings of extreme sadness, guilt, helplessness and hopelessness, and thoughts of death." (look at Sources below)

A Sign(s) of Depression vary depending on the person, type of anxiety/condition, environment, history, and intensity of the problem.

Natural remedies for these mental disorders don't get a lot of attention so they're often overlooked as successful treatment options. Fortunately the situation is changing. Natural remedies for depression and anxiety are most effective when used in conjunction with professional therapy. For many patients, that combination is enough and additional treatment methods usually aren't required.

The most common depression symptoms are as follows:

* "Empty" Mood

* Feeling of Guilt or Helplessness

* Loss of Interest in Pleasurable Hobbies

* Fatigue

* Difficulty Concentrating or Making Decisions

* Insomnia

* Irregular Sleeping (hours)

* Thoughts of Death or Suicide

* Physical Symptoms

* Irritability

Tips for Combating Depression and Anxiety

Depression and anxiety affect more than 20 million adults every year. With depression symptoms ranging from mild to severe, more people are seeking help for the treatment of depression and anxiety than ever before. Treatment options for depression and anxiety include prescription medication, hormone therapy, psychotherapy, and a variety of other specialized therapies.

Since each case is unique, there is no "one-size-fits-all" cure for these sometimes debilitating mental disorders. But when natural remedies are used in conjunction with other types of treatment, treatment success rates can soar!

Regardless of whether or not you are in a professional depression or anxiety treatment program, there are a number of things that you can do to help yourself.

Here are some proven tips for getting depression and anxiety under control:

Banish Negative Thoughts

Although it's nearly impossible to prevent negative thoughts from creeping into our minds, negativity makes depression and anxiety worse. Try to offset these thoughts by focusing on the positive things going on in your life. Positive, happy thoughts trigger the brain to release "feel good" chemicals that combat depression and anxiety naturally.

Avoid Associating with Negative People

Sharing your life with people who are negative only strengthens your own negative feelings. Likewise, sharing your life with positive, upbeat people strengthens your positive feelings. The choice is voluntarily so choose the people who can help you and avoid the ones who can't.

Journal Your Way to Relaxation

Take a few minutes each day to write in a journal. You don't have to create a novel, just jot down your thoughts on the positive and negative aspects of each day and note what made you depressed and what made you happy. At the end of each week take time to reread what you've written. Before you know it you'll have a clear picture of the things that lift you up and which ones bring you down. As soon as possible, start avoiding the things that affect you negatively and start doing more of the things that make you happy.

Tap Into the Power of Affirmations

Affirmations are uplifting statements that you say out loud. Because affirmations are spoken as if the results you are seeking have already occurred, they work by programming your subconscious to make true that which you have already told it to be true.

Feel free to create your own affirmations or use these:

"I deserve the happiness that I feel every day."

"I think only positive and uplifting thoughts."

"I am in control of my moods and outside issues do not affect me negatively."

"I love myself and I deserve the love of others."
