Solar Power Systems

After looking at plenty of houses and purchasing three different ones during my life, it's clear to me what most people want. Cutting edge features like solar power!

You know, those few crucial things that everyone would like to make a reality in their home. One of them is hardwood floors. Another is solar power. Most families want these, and they increase the value of a home. Solar power systems have been around for a long time. Solar Energy Student Competition Heats Up

Since its inception, solar technology has enjoyed popularity and suffered through lapses as people have embraced and beguiled it in turn. In the 1970’s, solar energy was hot (pun intended) as communities were built and heralded as the wave of the future – “solar is here to stay” was a familiar refrain, especially on the ‘left’ coast of California, Oregon and Washington.

Troubles with technology hampered solar, however, and it never really took off as expected. Recently though solar has enjoyed resurgence as new technology and demands for energy efficiency and environmental quality grow in popularity. Now more than ever, the trend towards ‘green’ or ‘sustainable’ building practices has made solar once again move to the forefront of technological innovation. More and more builders and architects are looking to the future and trying to be ready for the next wave of building. Education of young people is becoming a critical aspect of gearing up for what is sure to be a popular and needed technology for years to come.

Energy Efficiency and Green Building – Now more important than ever.

As I write this article the gulf coast has just been hit by the devastation of hurricane Katrina. From a human perspective it is truly a disaster and I encourage everyone to help out in anyway they can as brave folks struggle to get back on their feet while mourning the loss of loved ones and of their worldly possessions.

From a business perspective, it got me to thinking about things. When I saw the market today punish energy stocks as oil prices continue to rise I realized that there is maybe a business wake-up call in amongst this human tragedy.

We need to rethink the way we build and live in our homes. The focus has to be on energy efficiency and using products that make sense from the energy aspect but also from the sustainability aspect. It is time that we adopt – on a broad scale – new technologies and practices that decrease our reliance on traditional energy/building sources and welcome in these new technologies. It is not longer ok to say, “Well, that the way my dad did it, so it is good enough for me.” News flash! Your dad didn’t have access to all the tools that you do – use them!

Home Heating – Old Ways and New Days

Home heating in its earliest form originated millions of years ago when early cavemen made fires to keep warm. These fires were actually brought inside the caves when there were holes to let the smoke out. Thus, the first ‘central heating’ was developed. According to historians, the Greeks, possibly as far back as 2500 B.C, invented central heating by way of a fireplace or hearth.

The first technological breakthrough in heating was by – whom else – the Romans. Theirs was the earliest know form of what today is called radiant heating. In those times it was known as a hypocaust system and was, like many other roman inventions, an ingenious, yet simple solution. It involved passing combustion gases underneath the floor from one end. These gases heated the floor as they passed underneath and exited out the cold side of the floor. Used in upper class Roman homes and baths it was true luxurious heating for the time.

When the industrial revolution came around and buildings got larger and larger the first forms of central heating were adapted and developed. Today, central heat is the standard method and is widely used throughout the world for home and commercial use.
