The STEPS Centre is committed to training a new generation of students and researchers in our concepts, methods and approaches. From Masters’ students and PhD students to postdoctoral and visiting fellows, we aim to share our learning and build capacity among a new generation of scientists and social scientists.

We hope that by running a programme of courses at, and allied to, the STEPS Centre, we can help to secure opportunities for poor and marginalised people in the long-term, through future thinking and policy-making. Existing PhD students at IDS and SPRU also get involved with the Centre through attending seminars and other events.

MA Science, Society and Development

STEPS Centre staff teach on the MA in Science, Society and Development at the Institute of Development Studies.

Sustainability is one of the key issues facing a world with an increasing population and environmental change. Building on the major research projects done at the STEPS Centre, and involving innovative forms of teaching and interaction with leading researchers in the field, the MA looks at ways to address complex policy issues around agriculture, climate, health and water. What makes this programme unique is its emphasis on the ways that politics permeates policy processes at all levels, and plays out through competing framings, narratives, knowledges and networks. Starting with a solid grounding in development studies and society-science-technology relations, the programme then puts the dynamics of policy processes at centre stage.

‘African Farmer’ game

This online game, developed by the Future Agricultures Consortium, STEPS and the University of Sussex, was launched in 2014. Staff and students at IDS and the University of Sussex have played the game in group sessions, and it is available free of charge to a worldwide audience via its own website: africanfarmergame.org
