Gardens and Grounds at Trevina
Trevina House and Housekeeper Cottage are set in 14 acres of beautiful gardens, meadows, orchards and woods, all of which you can wander to your hearts content.

House Garden:
The gardens immediately around Trevina House & Housekeepers Cottage are based on the original Victorian plan and many of the original cobble paths remain. These paths link the House Garden in a series of garden ‘rooms’ such as the rear courtyard, front alpine patio, shaded lawn and the secluded aromatic cobled patio, ideal for evening drinks.
To the rear of the House & Housekeepers Cottage is the old courtyard with an ancient brick cistern pressed into service as a mediterranean style fish pond, shaded by two large fig trees. The high back bank is topped by a holly hedge, making for a sheltered sun trap. A disused gateway in the granite wall to the east gives romantic views across the fields to woods and beyond to the Iron Age Hill Fort at Berrydown. A great spot for your morning cup of tea on a warm summers morning and what a view for it too.
To the west of the house is a shade garden, with a large lawn and a stand of mature larch underplanted with hosta, helibores, skimia and several varieties of dwarf periwinkle. In spring there is a mass of snowdrops followed by daffodils, epimediums and bluebells. In June the Rosa phillipa ‘kiffgate’ growing through the trellis above the double entrance gates is a mass of white sweet scented blossom.
A gravel path along the side of the house turns onto a cobble path between a dry bank and a bronze/silver bed. The dry bank is planted with many bulbs, day lilies and large clump of Fascicularia pitcairnifolia. The top of the dry bank was originally graced with tall flowering Yucca, but the cold winters of 2009/10 & 2010/11 did for them.
To the front of the House and overlooked by the Music Room and front patio of Housekeepers Cottage is an alpine patio constructed of large slate slabs and containing many rare saxifrages and dainty alpine flowers surrounded by a strip of lawn. Surrounded by trees this area of the House Garden truly feels like a well manicured, sunny woodland glade.
From the front garden the cobble path passes down onto a series of granite steps between a steep bank of granite boulder covered in heathers and azaleas and a long sloping hardy herbaceous perennials. Finally, under a tunnel of roses & honeysuckles, down a steep flight of granite steps you will find the Victorian wrought iron gate between high stone walls topped by a mature beech hedge.
Woods, Meadows, Orchards and Kitchen Garden:
Opposite the House Garden iron gate is a matching snicket gate across the lane which leads through the high Cornish hedge into a grassy glade set in woodland. An ideal glade for picnics and an amazing warm sun trap even on windy days.
From this glade the paths lead off in several directions, different routes to explore the acres of young and mature woods, meadows, orchards and Kitchen Gardens. A high traditional Cornish hedge with trees atop boarders the area on most sides and the Trevina Brook forms our boundary along the bottom of the valley. Trevina Brook once fed a series of mediaeval fishponds along the valley bottom, one pond still exists a little further up the valley, overgrown and haunt to otters & herons. This pond is not in our ownership and unfortunately not open to our guests.
From the glade by the House, turn left and a little wooded track takes you toward the Orchard with many old varieties of apple, wildflower meadows with butterfly orchids and the high hedged kit chen garden with its Victorian greenhouse. Continuing further down the valley are deep woods with ancient beeches turning blue with massed bluebells in spring.
Turn the other way, along a woodland track to the wide open grassy ‘rides’ around a circular nut spinney, a pine & rhododendron walk. The Brook is more open here and ideal for a little paddle with the fish, surrounded by willow trees and dappled light.
