Mormonism Online: In Your Own Words |
    5 November 2014

5 NOVEMBER 2014 - POSTED BY Newsroom Staff

In Your Own Words is a regular sampling of online articles, blog posts and social media that represent some of the current conversations about Mormonism. The posts in this series do not necessarily represent the views of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, nor are they meant to be a comprehensive summary of the online conversations about the Church. The intent is to highlight social media content from individuals that will help journalists and the public better understand Mormonism.

President Eyring to Join Other Faith Leaders at the Vatican

The Vatican issued a press release Monday announcing a global meeting of faith leaders later this month to discuss the topic of marriage. President Henry B. Eyring of the First Presidency will represent The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the gathering, and he will have the opportunity to address the group on Tuesday, November 18.

Here are a few of the more than 160 comments posted in response to our Mormon Newsroom Facebook post about the event:

Crystalee Webb Beck What a wonderful collaboration of faiths!

Emily Marie Bennett This is great to hear! I hope they can successfully combine for good. Though many don't share our exact faith we share many same beliefs and I hope we can use our common ground to do even more good.

Keith Atwood This is great that these Religious Leaders can stand together regarding marriage being between a man and woman. Marriage between a man and woman is ordained of God.

Lyndall Larsen Quote by Jeffrey R Holland at an interfaith gathering held in the Tabernacle earlier this year "In an increasingly secular world and facing the attack on religious faith and religious freedom that we see all around us, it is imperative for the extended Christian community to acknowledge that what we have in common is so far-reaching and so potentially powerful in addressing the ills of society and of the soul that the very least we can do is know and understand each other better than we do.” (unquote)
I am sure we will see Interfaith meetings occur more frequently. I hope they do, for much good can be achieved, even it is just simply understanding each other better.

Updates of the historic event will be posted on MormonNewsroom.org.

The Importance of Being a Friend

In a recent post on the blog Normons, Jenna Davant shared her story of how she came to be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. We particularly like how Jenna describes the importance of being willing to reach out to other people and be a friend:

What I’ve learned as a result of Wynn and Tiffany so graciously and innocuously inviting me into their lives is that you just never know who you’re gonna save when you walk out that door in the morning. You never know how what you say or do is going to impact the people around you.
