BETHANY BEACH, Del.- In a 4-3 vote Friday afternoon, the Bethany Beach Town Council passed an ordinance that bans smoking year-round on the boardwalk and access ramps to the beach.
The year-round ban supplanted the previous seasonal ban on smoking on the boardwalk, which had been in place from May 15-Sept. 15.
Visitors to the boardwalk have mixed feelings about the ban. Sandy Fuller of Dagsboro is a smoker who said, "It might hurt the tourism and they'll go elsewhere. I know I will, I will not be back."
Smokers like Fuller said there are enough regulations already. She also said that nobody is on the boardwalk in the off-season.
But, others said the year-round ban is a good idea.
"I don't know why people should put up with people sitting next to you and smoke blowing in your face," said Chris Theodoropoulos. Proponents said the ban will help keep cigarette butts off the boardwalk and keep a uniform policy in the resort town.
