The Fire and Mountain Ecology Laboratory, in the University of Washington School of Environmental and Forest Sciences, conducts research on forest ecology, landscape fire ecology, and the effects of climatic change on mountain ecosystems of western North America. Faculty members Dave Peterson and Don McKenzie, employees of the US Forest Service Pacific Northwest Research Station Pacific Wildland Fire Sciences Lab, guide research with direct applications to resource management on public lands. They also cooperate with the U.S. Geological Survey and the UW Climate Impacts Group on the effects of climatic variability and change on forests, as well as broad synthetic efforts, including adaptation to climatic change.
