A good olive oil for skin care can provide daily moisture, UV protection and cell regeneration. Olive oil is a natural, deeply penetrating moisturizer and it contains a wide variety of valuable antioxidants that are not found in other oils. High grade Olive Oil has oleic acid, carotenoids, oleuropein, and vitamin E which is absorbed and used by our skin. Oleic acid helps to soften the skin, vitamin E improves the elasticity of the skin, and carotenoids protect your DNA and RNA. Yes, that’s right – olive oil has been found to reduce oxygen damage to DNA and RNA, which is a factor in preventing cancer, skin damage and signs of aging! Studies on mice have shown that application of olive oil immediately following exposure to UVB rays had a preventive effect on the formation of tumors and skin cancer.

How do you choose the right oil?

With so many different olive oils on the market how do you choose the right oil? Buy an oil with your specific use in mind, for example: olive oil for salad dressing is selected differently than olive oil for topical skin care. Here are some common terms and what they mean:

    • Extra-virgin olive oil is from the first pressing of the olives. It contains no more than 0.8% acidity, and is judged to have a superior taste. There can be no refined oil in extra-virgin olive oil. This should be the oil that graces your salads.
Virgin olive oil has not undergone any refinement; however, it has a higher acidity content (1-4%) than extra virgin olive oil so it retains only some of its natural aromas and flavors. This is one of the key elements of topical Olive Oil, but it still needs a little more.
Olive oil - this is the oil commonly stocked on supermarket shelves. It is usually a blended oil, consisting of virgin olive oil blended with lower-quality refined olive oil. It depends on the brand and the blend as to the quality and the price. Blended = Not For Skin!
Olive pomace oil is very refined olive oil, namely the residue that remains once the oil is pressed. It is of a very low grade and is therefore cheaper. It should be used for cleaning products rather than for cooking and consumption.Nothing Low Grade touches this body!
Cold pressed or first pressed have higher levels of polyphenols (potent antioxidants) due to the fact that no heat or solvents were used when processing the olives. This is the second key condition for Olive Oil that you SHOULD use on yourself.
Look out for "blended" oils. Blended "olive oil" products incorporate cheap, non-olive oils, which often make up more than half the content. These aren't necessarily bad - but you're not getting pure olive oil, and its not the best Oil for your skin.
  • Its true, over half of all oil imported from europe is not what it claims to be! Over 90 olive oil farms have been closed down due to misrepresentation of their oil. Words like ‘pure’ ‘light’ and ‘blended’ have appeared on bottles to confuse the consumer into not knowing how to select the highest grade oil for their purpose. But we’re committed to presenting products that meet the Juniper Desert ™ standard. By using our 4-point checklist you can be sure the olive oil you’re getting is the oil you need for healthy skin!

    Olive Oil Buying Guide

Here’s what to look for in an olive oil for skin care:

    1. Process: cold pressed. Heat destroys delicate chemicals and properties, oils that are cold-pressed retain more nutrients and undergo less degradation.
Grade: virgin or extra virgin olive oil. Virgin may be preferable to extra-virgin due to higher amounts of oleic acid.
Bottle: dark, non-light penetrating. Choose olive oil encased in a dark bottle, the darkness prevents light from oxidizing the oil, which can quickly lead to deterioration of the oil and rancidity.
Application: unless you want to spend big bucks on tub-fulls of olive oil you’re going to need a convenient applicator.
