Have you ever let your child borrow your tablet or smartphone to play a game or use an app they like? This is a normal thing to do, but for some parents, the few minutes their child spends on that device can produce some surprise costs.

For five-year-old Danny’s parents, that surprise cost was $2,500 after only 15 minutes playing “Zombies vs. Ninja.” Fortunately, since Danny didn’t realize what he was doing when purchasing $105 in-app game key and weapon packs, his parents were able to get a refund from Apple. This was just before Apple settled with other parents in similar situations.

Danny’s mother revealed, however, that even she wasn’t sure how her son had accrued all those purchases. There are probably millions of parents out there who are just as uninformed.

It’s vital that parents know what apps are capable of doing before allowing their kids to download them. In-app purchases are one of the red flags to look for if you have young children unaware of the monetary consequences the click of a button can have. Net Nanny for Android has a great tool for managing apps and even blocking in-app purchases.

The moral: safeguard your devices from your kids—even their unintentional abuse.

I work for Net Nanny and all opinions are my own.
