artist statement

While attending the University of Idaho, in pursuit of my BFA, I took almost every art class offered: ceramics, collage, drawing, mixed media, painting, photography, print making, sculpture, and of course, textile surface design. Currently I am focused on fabric and fibers as my primary art medium, building block. Fabric is so accessible and so tangible, yet in many of the processes I employ - from batiking to free-motion machine quilting - the opportunities for the element of surprise to occur within the finished results are ever-present.

We dress ourselves in fabric everyday, we cover ourselves with it at night, we use it to wash and dry ourselves. Fabrics and fibers offer us comfort and protection. Fabric is all around us in our lives and as such, is not always taken seriously as a medium from which fine art is made. Yet, as an art medium, it is endlessly pliable. It may be a 2-dimensional plane or a 3-dimensional form. Dyes and paints may be applied to the surface - stitches may puncture the weave, knit, or felt - layering may produce quilted results when stitched; edges may be finished or left raw. A myriad assortment of techniques may be implemented to embellish the surface. Fabric can be made to be so much more than a mundane "useful object."

With all of the many techniques and options available, my head is usually swimming with ideas for my next projects. If only there were more hours in the day! I love what I do, and especially love having a studio at the Dahmen Barn in Uniontown, WA. I would love to hear from you. Please stop by my studio and chat (I am there most Thursdays and Sundays) or visit my studio website - www.tracycreative.com/more or contact me through the Barn's website - www.artisanbarn.org.

I gladly accepts commissions.
